Alpaca Poo!!!

I was able to find an alpaca farm near me and called and she said if I want to go in the pasture and get it I am welcome to it. I am excited!!! (I think)

But now the questions???
Do I want fresh or older poo? Surely I can tell the difference
Can I put it in my tumbler right away or do I need to let it dry out?
Is alpaca poo good to have?
Is there anything else that I need to know?

I have llamas which are close cousins to alpacas. If she has old manure stockpiled see if you can get it, it'll look like dark soil. I call that stuff my private selection! I put fresh manure in the compost pile because I prefer not to smell it in the garden. Honestly it's not nearly as strong smelling as cow, horse, or chicken manure. Fresh or aged, it doesn't burn like other manures so if fresh is all you can get then go ahead and use it. It is great stuff.

Another thing, you don't need to dry it, use as is.

FYI the aged manure can go straight into a new bed as the compost portion of Mel's mix. If you can find 4 other composts to go with it, great! It keeps getting better.

If not, don't worry, I have used it as nearly 100% of my compost portion of Mel's mix with very good success. Then add 5 way compost to it later on. It's all good!

Enjoy your alpaca poo. Normal looking poo looks like dark brown to black and it is kidney bean shaped. To be extra picky on quality, I would pass up fresh beans that are all clumped or balled up. It can suggest internal parasites, but not always! Ok that's it for a fast lesson in camelid poo! (alpacas, llamas and camels, etc)

PLEASE don't apologize!! Will take all the advice you care to share.
She does nothing with the poo so I am assuming I can get what ever I want.
As long as the alpacas stay on the other side of the field every thing will be good!
Dogs and cats are as big as I go. But from what I have read alpacas are shy and gentle, I hope so. I am planning on putting it in my tumbler to try and get my compost going. But maybe i will put some around my tomatoes.

What we will do for a pile (or 2) of poo!!!! Very Happy

Ok then! Here's some more
Alpaca personality - Normally quite shy to the point of being skittish. Some people handle their alpacas a lot, those are more friendly. They would not attack. They're an animal that others prey upon. They are far more interested in staying within the safety of their herd. If there is a guard llama with them, then you might come nose to nose with a curious and gentle llama, who if properly socialized might sniff you briefly then walk away. Others are pretty nosy and will hang around to see what you are doing then go back to grazing.
