Post  FamilyGardening 6/4/2012, 7:50 pm

we planted two box's of corn in our back to eden-SQ Foot-raised bed garden

two 6x8 box's with one corn per square

first box is missing 10 corns

the second box is missing about half

some of the ears are much bigger then the others....while we are still getting new sprouts.....so the corn may have a couple of weeks between them.....

how will this effect the pollination?.....the corn is scattered thru out the beds with some germintating a lot faster then others.....

with the missng corn we checked it yesterday and the little corn seed under the soil is germinating....just hasnt made it self above ground yet......

we also have started more seed just in case we are missing some.....just worried this is going to mess with polination.....

any suggestions?

thanks

hugs

rose

When you were saying 'corn germ' this is what I was thinking. But reading more of the post I know know you mean 'germination'.

I planted 4 per square last year. Where a few did not sprout immediately stuck in new kernals. The problem I found was the existing corn shaded the younger corn, particularly on the eastside of the box. They were spindly and either produced little ears or none. But with the potential of 64 stalks it wasn't a big deal. As for pollination, in another thread the seeds were intentionally staggared. But I don't recall how that worked out for the poster...I'm sorry! Embarassed

There is a post 'somewhere on here' where a poster took a shoebox, collected the pollen, then dusted the silks to be sure of good pollination. If you can find the post, it might be worth a try. I could not find the post. Jo

I watched a youtube about pollinating your corn.

Tie a paper bag around the tassels at the top of the corn. The pollen can be released any time so its necessary to cover for 24 hours. The next day, carefully untie the bag and sprinkle the gathered pollen over the silks of the corns. Do it again the next few days and you should have good germination.

It isn't worth disturbing them.

They'll pollinate easily.
