Tiny corn spacing
I have never grown corn before and i know that the spacing for normal corn is 1 per sq but i want to grow this corn
http://www.reimerseeds.com/baby-corn.aspx
so i was wondering if the plants are smaller and therefor could squeeze 4 per sq have any of you grown this?

Re: Tiny corn spacing
i can't answer your specific question but I think the spacing for corn is 4 per square. At least that's the way i read it and planted it. If I am wrong we shall see what happens

Re: Tiny corn spacing
i always plant my corn 4 to a sq ft, that is 64 full size plants per 4x4 box. I get full size ears and a lot of them produce 2 ears. If you have the MM correct it will work fine. My plants get 6 to 7 tall.

Re: Tiny corn spacing
Okay. I'm such a geek that not only have I read the original Square Foot Gardening book, but I've also read the "All New" square foot gardening book by Mel! There's a story behind reading both, but the only valuable thing I have to say is that in the original book the spacing was 1 per square foot and in the all new book it was revised to 4/foot. So, while both are correct I would go with the newer version at 4/ft. The other thing you can do is read the back of the seed packet for spacing instructions and thinning instructions and calculate from there how much space each plant actually needs and figure it out for yourself. IE - if you are supposed to thin plants to every 3 inches, then you could actually plant 9/ft. Hope this helps!

oh i dident notice that in the new book i just remember the old one sorry i never grew corn before and if 4 regular wold fit in a sq than 9 of these might. There the kind you use for stir fry little tiny ears
its hard to read the back of remer seed packet since there is nothing there they say to go to there web-sight but you get generic corn growing info for regular corn
hmm ill have to get out my kindle and look at the other plants and see if there wer other changes i dident notice
tell you what i have one with 4 planted and have a few extra sq's so ill plant one with nine and make pics

Re: Tiny corn spacing
Baby corn is just regular corn that has not been pollinated. If you can find a corn that makes many ears per stalk, then you are ahead of the game.
My book, First printing Revised edition 2006
4 per square, page 192 and page 205
The book had a mis-print and some different printings have different spacing for the corn on different pages. I have grown corn at 4 per square for full size corn(over 6 ft tall) Any corn gets to full size before it usually puts on ears. This corn that Reimer has may be a short corn with many ears per stalk.
To get the baby ears that folks use for stir fry, grow the corn, when silk appears, pull the ears to keep them from being fertilized. Don't wait more than 24 hrs. or the corn can be tough.

Four square
My newly filled raised beds are planted four to a square. Already they are over 6 feet tall and have tassels (the squares I planted first) All have more than one small ear with virgin silk!. I am totally amazed! MDH tells people we add plutonium! Truth: nothing but Mels's Mix and water!
