Peach tree replacement
I'm going to have to replace a peach tree this winter and I need some suggestions as to what varietys to consider. I live in the high desert part of L.A. County where we have had one day wind chill temperatures of -20 in the winter and 110 in the summer.I have one tree that ripens in July and I would like to plant another that would ripen in August.Any suggestions?

Re: Peach tree replacement
Good question. I would have to go online and look it up. Might I suggest putting this in the general forum so you can elicit more answers. I am sure people in the south might have some ideas. Or Texas. They have some pretty severe weather also. I think peaches are more fussy about cold than heat and that is the extent of my knowledge.

Steve, Tom Spellman from Dave Wilson Nursery will be in Pomona on August 10 and 11. If you are still interested in finding info on peach trees and their problems and Pomona is not too far from you, you should stop by at his workshop. I attended this last year and it gave me a good idea on pruning but also gave me confidence on keeping my trees smaller to avoid fruit loss to waste. He answers lots of questions in his Q&A and during the workshop's pruning.

Re: Peach tree replacement
2 words Steve: Rio Oso
The FINEST peach! It's red, and juicy, bursting with flavor.
Did you know there is at least one peach orchard near you on Rt 18? They raise Rio Oso. That is where I first had them. I think it is a "u pick" lot.
They are not organic (raising an orchard in the desert, after all), and they do special things to protect from frost in April, like fogging. The orchard is on their side yard.
The fruit is incredible.
Funny you wrote this. I was thinking today about driving up there next month to get some. I want some seeds so I can put one in a pot (my neighbor has one).
I LOVE PEACHES!!!
