This is Larinus obtusus, a weevil whose larvae eat the seeds of knapweed an obnoxious weed of our pastures.

Mine is one of my many little spider friends that love to web between the tomato cages. Nothing better than going out in the morning and seeing what little pests they've taken care of for me while I was sleeping!
Now if only I could get one to weave up a nice little "That's some tomato" in her web, I would be the talk of the town!

Lightning Bugs!
I only rarely see these in western South Dakota but remember them fondly, growing up in Maryland. Such magical creatures!

I really don't like bugs at all, but I do love this beetle! Had one just like it in the same color back in the 70's.

I'm afraid I have to go with a tarantula right now. We're having a bad time with scorpions, and these guys eat scorpions and don't attack us. Sounds like a win-win to me!

It will be a while before the zinnia bloom yet but my June "bug" is a butterfly dining on a Zowie Zinnia (from last August). I'm dreaming of flowers...

Daniel - love the "big eyes" camouflage! They are beautiful but still scary looking.

I don't know if this was a good idea or not but I bought a mantis eggs at a local nursery, the curiosity got the best of me. The lady told me they leave in the fall before the weather turns bad and there is supposed to be 300 in the little cocoon. If it really works I am not so sure about running into them in the garden but I thought the kids would have a hay day because they are obsessed with bugs. I might even let them keep one or two if they don't freak me out too bad. Any thoughts?

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For June: June Bugs!
When we were young, my brother had a pet mantis in a jar but she died and he never threw it out. Some time later my Mom was doing dishes and noticed lots of little green bugs. We didn't know the mantis had laid eggs. We checked the jar and hundreds of babies were crawling out the air holes of the lid and they were all over our house!!!

I'm with you! Mine isn't a bug either, but was bugging me. Can you imagine how it looked when it swung in front of my eyes?
It was like a scene out of Arachnaphobia!

Is that a black widow? They are so sneaky, and that one is way too close for comfort!

It is actually a GIANT Devil's Flower Mantis - females can get up to 5 inches tall. There is another Devil's Flower Mantis that is a bit smaller. Personally, I go for the GIANT!

June bug...
Unobservant me... this is the first bug I actually catch in my garden, and that was this last weekend. Going to have to keep an eye out for an invasion.
