Has anyone had any success growing watermelons using the SFG method or the regular method?

OH GOSH, yes, i have huge success with melons, squashes, and gourds. sometimes, too much success. LOL the first year, we planted ONE pumpkin seed and it took over. we called it the plant that ate howard avenue. we harvested several 12" tall pumpkins from that one vine.

the following year i added melons to the garden and had the same results--so beware. Smile

Sounds nice, but I wonder if it's possible to grow them on trellises in a SFG without them sprawling all over the place? I haven't tried. I've got a separate spot in my yard that I'm trying to grow melons n pumpkins because I don't feel as if I can contain them in a SFG.

I'm doing a decent job with tomatoes, zucchini n cucumbers this year, but I wounder if anybody had success with melons n pumpkins in just a couple squares?

I have three volunteer watermelons growing from an older compost pile. Laughing I think I might just let one of them go. We'll see.

lol sounds like fun! I could always use some good melon! Very Happy but now I'm wondering how successful anyone's been being in a desert and growing them and how they've managed.

oh desert--i don't know about that. in nashville we get near desert temperatures but near rain forest humidity.

about trellising: yes, you can do it, that's how i do it now. you'll need to create a little sling for the melons/squash/gourds, i like nylons but you can use anything that you have handy, such as strips of an old t-shirt.

They grow them commercially in the low desert, but I'm not sure about the high desert where you are. In the low desert (I grew up on the CA/AZ border) they are starting to wrap up the harvest by the 4th of July.

ETA: Actually, that's the cantaloupes that are wrapping up by then, the watermelon are later.

Agreed with Elliephant. My cantaloupe and honey dew are starting to fruit... the watermelon is vining but the flowers are just starting to appear.

I guess the only way to find out is to get a few more seeds, have plenty of water, and find a way to contain the vine. Very Happy
