How many indeterminate tomatoes per square?
Putting them in today into our new raised bed
I searched the forum and googled and couldn't find how many tomatoes per square foot?
Do you guys do one per square or allow two squares for one plant?
Planting big boy, better boy and genovese (i think that's what they are)
Would APPRECIATE any advise!
thank you

Thanks for the clarification.
Do most SFGers use the single stem training for their gardens - per the other thread in this forum? Or maybe you can only answer for you...

Re: How many indeterminate tomatoes per square?
I have been doing 1 per square as in the ANSFG book, page 230. I've not tried the pruning/training yet. I just use a heavyduty trellis.

1 per square for indeterminates as they take up a lot of room.

i sort of prune the indeterminates--depending on my mood and how i think they are doing. i don't prune determinates, although i will sometimes pull off a sucker to start a new plant.
it is really more art than science. so much depends on your growing conditions which can be quite different even than your neighbors.
and you are welcome!
Re: How many indeterminate tomatoes per square?
This is so confusing! I have read at least four sources explaining pruning and I have yet to positively determine which 'branches' are the suckers and which are the real deal. Thus, I have never pruned. (Well, I only grew them in a pot last year and this year, but still....)

Re: How many indeterminate tomatoes per square?
when the plant is young, it is easier to tell: the stem is more or less vertical. the branches are more or less horizontal. the suckers grow in the junction where the branch meets the stem, and they go out at a 45º angle.

when the plant is bigger, you'll have to look more carefully but you can usually figure it out--the suckers are always on top of the branch junction rather than below it.
