Pole Green Beans - Help! Leaves are rotting?
Hi all - I'm hoping that someone can help diagnose my problem with my pole green beans. This morning I noticed that some of them have a black edge around the leaves.
This leaf is still attached to the plant and you can see on the tip that it's all black.

This leaf was the worst and I plucked it off since it looked almost dead anyways.

The other side of the leaf.

If anyone knows what's wrong....could you also lmk how to fix it?
Thanks so much!!!
Micki

Micki, maybe too much water... and perhaps getting water on the leaves?
Pepper....How is the health of the vine? Is it still growing? Do the rest of the leaves look yellow or green? My beans always have a degree of this thing going on, the leaves just expire here and there, but the vines most always seem to keep going.

for the quick reply. Yes I have quite the dense planted stand and most of the leaves are a light green aproaching yellow. They do seem to be producing alot of beans. A few of the vines are at or near the 8 foot tall trellis top. I just want to be a good 'parent' to my first garden babes!!

Oh right, you have that whole bed planted with beans.
I don't think it would hurt anything to give some compost tea... I mean easy compost tea... A shovel full of homemade compost in a 5 gallon bucket, fill it with water, mix it this afternoon then pour it into the bed tomorrow... or the next day. you may need a few buckets full for a bed that size.
When watering, always water at ground level...
That's what I would do... hopefully should see some improvement next week.

Thank you for the suggestions! Ugggh we just got a bunch more rain today, so hopefully the "rot" won't go too far. I do have a soaker hose, so I'll use that from now on. Thanks again!

Re: Pole Green Beans - Help! Leaves are rotting?
I've had problems with green bean seeds rotting in the ground this yeas...it's a challenge because the top inch or so of Mels Mix dries out very quickly, but the soil past that level does not need the additional water.
Here in kansas city we basically skipped winter...hear on a radio garden show the other day that leaf mold will be a big problem for many plants (veggies, flowers, and shrubs) this year. Not sure what it looks like however.

Made the compost tea today(ten gallons) will add some tomorrow. Should I remove the lower tier of leaves to make access to the soil better?

Bean seedlings dying!
I was wondering if anyone knew more about this? I had 10 bush beans sprout and do really well then, all of a sudden, this happened to them! 6 died overnight. The last four look very sad. Since they only had their first or second sets of three leaves, this was fatal to them. I'd like to replant, but don't know if this will just happen again.
(Sorry about bringing back an old post, but I was searching for an answer and saw these pictures showing exactly my problem.)

My pole beans looked dead/dying the whole season. Still got load and loads of beans off them.
Unless it frosted, they aren't dead.

Re: Pole Green Beans - Help! Leaves are rotting?
bringing it back is plenty OK FreyaFL. My real issue was 3cornered leaf hoppers and leaf roller caterpillars. The leaf hoppers decimated my whole stand, I never did get a handle on them. I finally used Liquid seven out of pure frustration. NOTHING that was susposed to work on them did. The juvenile critters were the same color green as the stalks(well enough to hide them till you were on to them). Next year I will not plant so dense. They also ruined my replacement stand so.........

hope it helps.
