Does anyone have a good technique to deter birds from roosting/perching on top of a conduit trellis -- the top bar?

Thanks,
Bill

You could try hanging old CD disks or dollar store pin wheels . The birds could be hunting insects in the garden. What kind of birds have you got?

Mostly red breasted robins, and some black starlings.

Thanks for the pointer -- good passive measure.

I've seen red mylar 'flash tape' for sale at the stores. We have mylar pom poms that are always shedding, so I tied a few of those streamers to our conduit trellis and the round cages I have surrounding the eggplant and peppers yesterday.

No birds perching on the trellis today. (Though I'm wondering if I want the birds to eat stuff in the garden...)

Robins "diet consists of
invertebrates
(such as beetle
grubs
, earthworms,
and caterpillars),
fruits and berries."
(From Wikipedia).
I leave the birds to their own devices usually.
They take their toll on the gardener and farmers produce, while also
helping to keep the insect population in check. A useful nuisance in
my opinion.

I've seen several gardens and fields in the
country with empty 2 qt clear soda/water bottles, hung from string
about 18"-36" long, on poles, around the perimeter of the
garden. I'm guessing a pole about every 4'.
I haven't tried this, but it seems
to work, as it's put-up taken-down every year.
Another item I've seen
on the ends of the string are CD/DVD's. These really flash in the
wind. Again, I haven't tried this.

I've seen crows and smaller
birds sitting on top of scarecrows so they don't work.

I'm
interested in the outcome of the pom-pom streamers and if they work.

As always, good luck with your project!

Martha said she had really good luck with the mylar streamers/ribbon keeping birds away from the raspberries.

"And what's wrong with perching on a trellis? My mommy just fed me a bug from pattipan's SFG."

Just took this before supper tonight. This little robin let me walk right up to take his picture! Mama robin was not happy with me, though.

good to see you patti!!....what a cute pic of that baby bird!

we use the dollar store pin wheels around beans & peas when first planted because the birds tend to peck the tops off......we also started the beans inside this year too.....so far its working.....

the rest of the garden they can enjoy Razz we even put in a bird bath for them Shocked

hugs

My cousin and I also have birds perching on garden trellis. She has been using silver tinsel on her berrries and it worked for her last year. I use dollar store spinners on the four corners of the raised beds and small shepherds hooks with moving/spinning garden decorations hanging on them inside the beds. I also have a cat that chases the birds when they land in the garden. I think the birds cause less damage than the cat trying to catch the birds!

Bird feeder on the opposite side of the yard? My birds are much more interested in those.

Laughing

Having 4 outdoor cats - I can relate. The dainty female walks on the grid very carefully until she sees something to chase.

Way back in the late 1990s, Rodale Press asked for gardners' ideas for what worked (and didn't) in gardening ideas. I sent in two suggestions, one of which was to use out-of-date computer CDs to hang around the garden to deter birds (especially for us, from eating the cherries). Upshot of my suggestion, Rodale Press sent me a complimentary copy of the book: 1,001 Ingenious Gardening Ideas. I still find clever ideas in it, like: Sphagnum stops damping-off by keeping the surface soil dry and keeping moisture away from the stems of vulnerable seedlings. And, starting seeds in vermiculite...now where else have I heard that? Wink Nonna
