Corn Stalks Empty Corn Stalks

Post  Don T 5/24/2012, 4:07 pm

Okay, This is the first time I have noticed this. There are about 25% of my corn stalks have secondary stalks forming near the base. Will this secondary stalk take away, add, or have no effect on the production of ears formed on the plant? Should I cut them off or just leave it grow?

Last year I left those alone. As the plant reaches its full height you may be pleasantly surprised to see an ear of corn growing out of the "V". But I grew corn once so it'll be nice to see what others have to say.

I agree, most corn will put on another ear so leave it. Corn doesn't need much help except for standing it up after a strong wind. It will put down roots that will help it stand up a little later in it's growth.
