I already posted this on the "Newbies" message board, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to post here, too. I'm new to the square foot gardening method. Got the book after we turned the unused sandbox into a raised bed and decided to make two more to match. They're 5X5 so I decided to just plant flowers in the center so I don't really have to work it. Here's my problem: my husband, while trying to be helpful (to save me weeding later) decided to mulch around the veggies and herbs. It has rained for 3 days and I just got back there to discover it. It's black mulch and I feel pretty confident that whatever is added to make it black cannot be good for the taste. I'm also feeling pretty sure that much of it has already leached out with all the rain. Thoughts? Ideas?

Is it dark shredded bark mulch? Would you post a photo?

More than likely it is all well and good.

I don't know the answer but I know what she's talking about. All the big box stores are selling colored mulch nowadays. You can buy black, brown, or red and the bag says the color is guaranteed to last for one year.

If it came in a bag, what does the label say about using on vegetable gardens?

I dug the bag out of recycling. It includes vegetables on the list of uses so I guess it's ok. Thanks for the replies.

When the season is over I think you want to scrape off all the wood mulch and not turn it over into your MM.

You must have the Scott's brand then. The Shultz brand had absolutely no information on it. I just got back from Walmart, where I took these pictures:

Glad it worked out! Be sure to give that Considerate and Helpful husband of yours a big hug!
