I am new to gardening anything but tomatoes and herbs. I've branched out to the following: peppers, beets, kale, swiss chard, cucumbers, squash. Was contemplating putting potatoes in a large wooden bucket so can dig around in it for them after they grow. Yet, could put these at these unusually shaped edges of my trapezoidal raised bed. Had also considered something pretty like marigolds. Yet, when I sit on the bed, not sure I want to contend with bees. this would be pretty though. Do marigolds attract many bees? Another options is shallots. What two you think?

Asparagus might be good at the edge here. If so how to space in 7 by 12 inch rectangle. No knowledge of how big they get.

Maybe a few eggplants? they only get about 2-3 foot tall and are so yum!

How many of these little half squares are you needing to fill? How about 4 bush beans per space. If they are on the north edge and you can put us a series of stakes or trellis, pole beans are also an option. Nasturtiums are good garden companions. Also herbs in the half spaces, especially basil near the tomatos.

Marigolds are not big bee draws. But you do need plenty of bees around the garden to pollinate the squash and cukes and they help the tomatoes as well. There are other flowers that are nice as fillers. Nasturium, pansy, calendula are all good in salads and would fit 2 in a half square. Also consider herbs like cilantro, basil and parsley.

Carrots, plant about 16 - 20 seeds within the square. Chives for a perennial plant at an edge 1/2 square, it gives nice lavender flowers, it's compact and can take the cold. Leaf lettuce (especially oak leaf). If you live where it's sunny and hot, make a cover about 14" high and shade them with household screen and close-pins. Oregano grows well if you make sure to water it and it lays flat on the ground. Marigolds are fine and it keeps some insects and critters away but, I think perennial Dianthus would be good also, it doesn't seem to get tall and it's easy to trim and water and has great color choices. Onion or garlic sets if you eat the top greens like we do, they'll get ugly when the bulbs are mature in about 4-5 months but they're dependable. Patio tomatoes in the rear squares. If you can manage a 2'x2' square, plant 1 Zuchini BUSH seed and you'll have all the squash you can microwave for the summer.
