Is it a good idea to vacuum the seed packets with a FoodSaver? Empty Is it a good idea to vacuum the seed packets with a FoodSaver?

I have a large container and a foodsaver vacuum machine. I will be storing my seeds in the vegetable drawer because the other areas of the fridge are about 33 degrees and the vegie drawer is about 37 degrees. I can't seem to find an answer to my question of should I vacuum the seed packets and garlic cloves with the Foodsaver before storage.
Does anyone have the answer?

Thanks, Kitty

Kitty ,

When you destroy the vacuum in the container it will quickly draw in moist air and this will also penetrate into the seeds perhaps even making them have a shorter life than usual due to the moisture . So for me it would be a NO NO .

What lots of people do is get a cup of white rice and slip it in the oven before it cools down to dry it out after 1/2 hr or so , put the now cooled dried rice straight from the oven in a " POP sock " and place it in the container add the seed packets the seal the container .

The now supser dry rice will draw the moisture out the air , the paper packets and the seeds . Set yourself up to have a new charge of dried rice ready to replace the old rice after six or so times of opening the container.... alway replace the lid immediately after taking seed out or putting them back in.

There is a product called silica gel it is a form of silica bead and when these are dried in an oven they can take the place of the rice. Sometimes telephone guys have them , ask for those that have been used and have taken in moisture .. some times an indicator tag shows pink or blue .. if you can get any of thes dry them out in an oven the tag will change colour to dry and procced as for the rice . I like these indicator tags for it gives you a visual indication of the moisture present .

You can also use a fullers earth type cat litter but again dry it spread out on a tray in a cooling oven . It comes as greyish granules & do tends to be a bit dusty but it is cheap.

Kitty;

Never even thought of that idea but perhaps use plantiod's advicefor storing. Personally I purchased a CD container, you can find then at an office supply store, and use the packetsplantiod suggests and keep them in the fridge.

I find those packages in the vitimans I take so I put them in the bottom of the container.

Last year someone sent me some seeds and I put them in a mason jar with the package then in the refridgerator and when I planted them this spring I had 100% success rate. Good seeds or did something right.

Your explanation really helps. I Have several moisture thing's left over from fish oil bottles and from our security cams. Maybe they will do the trick?
