square foot-and-a-half gardens
for those who don't know me, which is most of you
i use my certification to do community service projects such as gardens for spouses of deployed soldiers, schools, etc.
yesterday my family and i opened our own little free library and gleaning gardens. the gleaning garden is not strictly SFG, but it is close. because i used free materials to build the box, it is not by the book, but the total square footage is the same as for a regular 4'x4' box. each box is 6' long and 18" deep, so i planted one main crop plant in a square and one companion plant in the half square with it. the trellis frame is up but the netting is not yet.
the little free library details are here:

awesome pics Rowena! very nice work...I have mentioned SFG to some of my co-workers...some of them are looking for something to do on their 4 days off and I told them this is a great way to use their time and control the source of food they can have. your site would be a good example for them to see. thanks for sharing.

I love them both! What wonderful gifts to your community.
Our elementary school had the official opening of our Little Free Library last Wednesday. Two clubs worked together to create it - Art Club put it together and the Service Club collected the books.

what a great way to create a community working together!
yesterday i built the garden box for the base of the library--got it finished and filled with mix just in time for the rain to start. LOL it looks like it today will be perfect for transplanting. this box will hold herbs, and i'm considering some sunflowers for the back just because i like them and they count as food.
