I just joined the group and this is our first year of doing a garden. We've done pretty good so far but......the vine borers have attached my squash. I read on several sites that there are companion plants to help deter the borers. Any input on that would be greytly appreciated. I'm starting a new crop today.

I'd just like to say Hello and glad you\'re here to the SFG Forum. I'm sorry, I have no info on squash vine borers. (Is it a visible critter? then you just pluck'em off and squish 'em, or dunk them into a bucket of soapy water)

We are "recreational" gardeners so we're not the best at eyeballing the plants as well as others. And, we aren't sure we know what the adult bug looks like that is laying the blasted eggs that are hatching the larvae that are boring into out vines. AAARRRGGGG.

It's horribly frustrating since zucchini is supposed to be one of the easiest veggies to grow around here. Kinda like green beans being so easy, well I got those down pat....but I HATE GB's. Couldn't pay me to eat those nasty things but my husband love'em. I WANT SQUASH!!!!!!! Just joined 3085260134

This is the second thread I've read mentioning squash vine borers (the other is in "Darned red wasps" by Pepper). I guess my "pluck 'em" idea really isn't practical here. The adult is a moth that looks like a wasp, that lays eggs which become pupa inside the stem, effectively blocking water to the plant. affraid INSIDIOUS! I haven't even gotten most of my plants for the season, and already I'm worried about them. I guess this is where the vigilance made easier by SFG comes into play.

You can get yellow wax beans .. slightly better tasting and can also be sweet pickled.

Welcome to the site , hope you get a lot of mileage out of it.

Don't be afraid to ask questions or put up photos of bugs etc or your gardens .
