Can isolated boxes be a coldframe? Empty Can isolated boxes be a coldframe?

Post  hruten 5/14/2012, 9:39 am

This question is looking ahead to the fall season planting. Preparation is everything right?

Can I use boxes that are not in contact with soil as a cold frame? I do have a South facing block wall that would radiate a decent amount of heat and protects the area from wind. I have Coleman's book 4 season harvest, but I didn't find him going into using containers as wintering shelters. I figure someone here has the answers. Thanks

Can isolated boxes be a coldframe? Empty Power?

Do you have electricity near enough to give them a bit of bottom heat?

Something like this:

If not I think you may end up with your beds freezing all the way through.

Can isolated boxes be a coldframe? Empty Thanks

Post  hruten 5/14/2012, 4:40 pm

I was afraid that might be the case. I can roll (casters) the 3x4 bed near the house on SE wall(and electricity) but as you know we get quite a bit of winter precip. Without spending any $$ I don't think it will happen No (definitely not safely)It sounds like I should just make do with what I can get in an extended unheated season.

Can't blame a girl for trying. I will keep an eye open for some of those outdoor rope lights though. Thanks for the help and the link!!
