Finding Vermiculite in Europe Empty Finding Vermiculite in Europe

Hi, everybody -- hope you're all getting to see your little sprouts reaching toward the sun. Hopefully we're now past our last frost, and we can get to gardening with fewer worries!

Finding vermiculite on this side of the Atlantic is a challenge, but not impossible -- over here, it's a matter of knowing where to look!

But try looking at your local builders' merchant - look in the insulation department, and NOT in the garden centres!

UK - B&Q, Wickes, Focus DIY, Homebase -- even the "hardcore" suppliers like Jewson's or Travis Perkins if the retail stores don't have it.

France - Castorama and Leroy Merlin carry it, I know. 11-12 Euros per bag for 100L, as of April 2010. The stuff I bought even says right on the bag that it can be used for horticulture.

Holland - Bouwmat has been carrying it, too -- I think Mirjam paid about 13E for hers.

Germany - try Bauhaus, OBI, and Praktiker.

When you find it, post a reply here, and we'll get it added to the database.

Oh -- and don't worry about finding a particular grade -- it seems that they carry only one option anywhere I've seen...so having it is better than trying to find a substitute!

Nice list, LaFee, we should have put you in charge of the vermiculite database! WardinWake is making a few more tweaks to it-hopefully we'll get it posted next week.

Vermiculite can be bought straight from a manufacturer in Holland. Pull in Rhenen sells 100 liter bags for €15 ex. tax. They sell different grades, both for agriculture and insulation. You probably want the Agra-Vermiculite M3. They can ship it as well but that is quite expensive (3 bags costs about €45 to Zeeland, so that would double the price). Pull is opened mo-fri. 0318-471001 www.pullrhenen.nl

I mentioned elsewhere, but in the UK you can buy coarse grain vermiculite manufactured by Dupré, from Sheffield Insulations among other places (they have many branches). It's called Micafil. They charged me about £14.
