The way it is written makes me think they are not meaning double digging the way I mean double digging when I say it....
That line makes me think of a movie...

True. Obviously the author of the quoted material had only read the 1981 version of Square Foot Gardening. It's the one we used for the last 4 years. The All New version is sooo much more productive. The boards for aisles between 4-foot sections advocated in the old book were (I'm here to tell you) not the best idea....however, slugs LOVED them for the hiding places they offered.

There was recently an article in Mother Earth News about just this subject. They say that the pioneers of the concept of gardening in a small space were Initially John Jeavens with his book "How to grow more Vegetables than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine"....and then Mels first SFG.
His book came out in 1974, and goes into the concept of double digging. His approach to the issue is a bit different from Mels, in that he is more about self sustainability, whereas Mels book is more about growing in urban settings.
I think that Mel has organized the concept very well in his most recent book, such that it is an "anyone can do this" concept.
I have both books and find them very complimentary. It is appealing to any gardener and that is what makes ANSFG great.

All New Square Foot Gardening book (2006) Mel stopped all the hard work
of double digging and mulching. He introduced "Mel's Mix" - a
soil-less mixture of 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 coarse vermiculite and 1/3
blended compost so your existing soil is not used. I would encourage
those interested in the SFG method to read the All New book and then
