I have a dilemma. The local farmer that gave me some cow manure for my compost pile also gave me a handful of Collossus southern peas. I am all out of bed space, but I do have four 12" long deck pots in the garage that are not going to be used for flowers this year.

My dilemma, High fertility produces excessive vine growth and poor yields. High fertility perfectly describes MM. Since I will have to mix up something for the deck pots, is it possible to dumb down MM. I was thinking maybe using just one of the not so good composts from Lowes, vermiculite and peat. Or I can go completely off track and mix some topsoil, vermiculite and peat for a terrible mix. I have enough of my "GOOD" MM left to fill a couple of pots.

I have never grown southern peas before, but my grandmother always had them in her garden. I do love to eat them and have fond memories of sitting on the front porch with my grandmother rocking and shelling peas.

When you say Southern peas, do you mean peas such as purple hull, blackeye, crowder? Just curious since I planned to stick some crowder peas in my MM beds....I'm a newbie so I have any number of mistakes lurking.... Rolling Eyes

Yes, the field pea, crowder pea, cowpeas, southern pea, blackeyed pea. All the same thing just different names. I found this link that has some information

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-20.html

and there is a Friday Rookie topic

https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t7159-friday-s-rookie-topic-v-southern-peas-aka-cowpeas-or-field-peas.

I probably should re-read that one myself.

Just in general, one thing I do with beans and peas is that I don't add the scoop of compost to replenish the square before I plant.

Ok the great experiment is on.

The long deck pot down low is full of MM light, 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 peat and 1/3 blend of 2 composts. The high one is full of full strength MM.

Other side - The low pot is MM light and the high pot is a mix of 1 part vermiculte, 1 part peat, and 6 parts plain old cheap topsoil with just a sprinkle of Black Hen.

I planted 12 seeds per pot hoping I get 8 or 9 good plants.

BTW, the new raised area is to keep the rabbits out of my peppers, basil and other goodies. I almost lost a pepper to the wascally pair that think my yard is their play ground.

A few of the field peas are poking their heads up. Weather turned chilly and extremely windy over the past few days so the may wait a few more days to peek out.

I haven't tried posting a picture before so maybe it will show up. I planted dixie lee peas and so far the plants look good. I put them 5 to a square. I have 16 squares planted. Not sure how many plants I needed to pick a bushel or so. This is my first attempt and if this produces enough peas, I'll put up another box next spring and plant butter beans, too. I planted them Easter weekend.

as of 6/25
L MM lite and R topsoil mix
field peas and MM Dscn0836
L full MM and R MM lite
field peas and MM Dscn0837

and 7/7 as you can see the topsoil mix is in trouble, and the full MM is the only one blooming.

Wish I could get the final results but the plants will probably be dead by the time I get back. I just realized how much the rest of the plants in the area have grown.
