Tomato Transplants Empty Tomato Transplants

Post  Kelejan 5/12/2012, 2:19 pm

A couple of weeks ago I bought some tomato transplants from our local gardening club members.

Most of them are in very small containers. My problem is that it will be a little while before I can put them outside, meanwhile they are outgrowing their pots.

I have three options. Put them outside under clear cover until the frost date is past. Pot them into larger containers and wait for the last frost date then plant. Or just leave them as they are.

Thanks, fellow SFGers.

I vote for larger pots.

Wal mart has the biodegradable ones for like 2 bucks for 6... You can just plant them with the pot attached, although I admit I peeled them off mine. I kept my tomato transplants for a month in the house with some hardening during the day without issue in them.

I also vote for larger pots, and if it is going to be a really long time, consider planting permanently in 5 gal buckets that you can just set outside when the weather finally cooperates. Tomatos grow well in buckets and you can set a series of buckets under a trellis if indetermanent or a cage if determanent. Just a thought.

My excess plants put into buckets and set along the side of a cattle panel arch.

being just up the road from you, I have several tomato plants that I just grow in large 5 gallon buckets, and last year they were pretty much the same as the ones I planted.
The cool thing about growing in large pots is that you can bring them inside in the fall.

Well, I got right onto it and repotted them into larger ones and I think they look very happy as they were all rootbound. I also repotted a couple of peppers and an eggplant.

I will give it some thought about putting them into 5 gallon pots, Walshevak and GWN, as last year the few toms that I had hardly made pink let alone red. I will go and find some five-gallons next time I am out. Or perhaps ask on Freecycle? Philct, I never get to WalMart as that is in the next town (Trail) and I seldom go far from my own patch nowadays. (I miss my DH.)

As I only have six plants, all different, I might make or purchase a flat trolley so that I can wheel them from shade to sun as needed. That is what I do for myself when I want to sit in the garden; depending on whether it is hot or cool, I follow the sun or the shade as needed. The toms can migrate with me.

I am so enjoying the warm weather that we are now having; I thought it would never arrive. A few days ago I had the gardening centre to myself, and they made me most welcome; now all of a sudden I can see them being stressed out with everyone descending on them at once.

Hello,

I already planted my garden out in the yard, but may pick up some 5 gallon buckets for a later harvest to carry indoors or into the garage for a couple of veggies.
