So how much or often do you water the seeds you have in the ground. I have spinach, lettuce, carrots, onions, beets, swiss chard, peas, garlic and potatoes.... Do I water these every couple of days??? or just let nature do its thing?
NOTE: this gal does not have a green thumb, but is hoping to have one by posting lots of questions.

I water my seeds everyday it doesn't rain, until they sprout out of the ground. In the summer when I plant my fall garden, I usually have to water twice a day due to the heat.

My shallowly planted seeds, the little ones like lettuce and radishes, needed a decent sprinkling of water 2-3x a day to germinate. The top half inch or so of my MM tends to dry quickly. The beans which were planted deeper than that level haven't seemed to need more than once a day. Potatoes I did in my dirt garden to free up valuable real estate. I just let nature water them after the initial good soaking at planting and they came up fine.

What are you watering newly sowed seeds with? It seems like I always wash my seeds out of place? Are you just "misting"? I have several plants that seem like they are dog legged or toppled over (not anchored firmly in the ground) and I wonder if I'm washing my seeds out of the ground... ? Smile

That's another problem my drip irrigation has solved for me.

Most seeds I tend to mist daily, or twice daily, until they sprout. Potatoes and other large "seeds", I just let drip irrigation deal with.

Eyedropper or baby syringe works well too .... but when I can't find where I left it ... a straw with your finger over one end works too Very Happy

I like the baby syringes because I can log/record how much/how frequent I'm adding water while they germinate/sprout & don't have to try to remember next season

Thanks! I'm going to try out some of the suggestions and hope I can avoid toppling over plants and having to "remound" dirt at the bottom... Smile

I'm usually hurrying for time in the morning before work, but it gets really hot here so I make sure to water the seeds before leaving (granted, this is my first garden!). I have a hose nozzle with a "shower" setting and I use that with very little water pressure. It seems to do a fair job at wetting the vermiculite pockets without washing the seeds away - at least, so far everything seems to be coming up in the correct place it was supposed to. Smile I would use the "mist" setting, but I have transplants in the box and there's too much overspray that might wet their leaves on that setting.

Any seeds sown need moisture to germinate, so water as needed to keep the soil moist, once, twice or 3 times a day if necessary, until they sprout.

With tiny seeds I wet the soil first, then sprinkle with the seeds and cover with a dusting of vermiculite or a light sprinkling of soil. For lettuce, which needs sunlight to germinate, I leave them uncovered.

The pre-wet soil holds the seeds in place better. To keep it moist, I use a mister bottle for tiny seeds but with larger seeds buried under the soil a little, I use a small child's watering can I have with a light spray. It does the trick until germination.

I think my plants are doomed then. I have had the seeds in the ground for a week and the potatoes and onions for longer. I've only watered a couple of times and definetely not daily. If I am diligent from now on...will my garden have a chance? It has rained a little , but no major down pours.

sheesh....barely into the dirt and already I'm trying to kill the little babies.

LOL I killed 2 squares of radishes, 3 of lettuce and 1 of carrots before I figured this out. Seeds are cheap Wink
