Do birds dig? Empty Do birds dig?

I just filled two 2x2 by 12" carrot boxed but only got to planting one of them so far. The other one is vacant and I noticed a hole in the soil in the corner and I'm wondering if a bird would have dug this to get a worm? I have a fence around my garden so I don't think it could be a rodent unless a cat jumped the fence for whatever reason. Kind of confusing to me and if it was a bird I'm hoping he didn't get my carrot seeds in the other box.

Did it rain recently to bring the worms to the top of the soil? If a bird had seen a worm end wiggling around the surface, it might peck at the soil a bit to get at the worm...but I don't think it would be capable of digging very far. I could be wrong though.

What about squirrels? Are there trees around the garden where they could hop from one tree outside the fence to another inside your fence? Or wiggle through an opening somewhere in the fence?

Squat Johnson has a picture somewhere of a perfect little hole where voles pull down the plant completely.

I'm not sure what could have dug this little hole. It looks like it has been dug from the top of the surface and is about 2in diameter by like 3 inches deep. There aren't really and tree around the fence whatsoever but maybe a squirrel snuck in another way although I'm not sure what he would have been digging for in a vacant box.

The nut he buried which is now under your SFG, of course! I'm picturing a poor confused squirrel going home to his squirrel wife empty handed. "I swear, dear, I dug exactly where you told me and there was NO PEANUT there! We've been robbed!!"

I emptied several flower pots this year to put in fresh potting mix. Every one of them had buried peanuts in them. I felt like I was robbing the 1st National Squirrel Bank LOL!

Yes they do!

Just this morning I saw a robin poking around in my box.... I threw a rock at him Evil or Very Mad

Lucky for him my aim is terrible.

Anyway.... upon investigation I saw the hole he was making was about 3 inches deep and sloped out towards where the bird was standing.

Grrrrr.....
