Kateh, I know exactly what you mean. The first thing I do when I get home is check the garden. I think Sheba, my dog, is getting jealous of all the time my son and I spend pampering these plants. Hope your garden does well.
When our daughter gets home off the bus she goes straight to the backyard to check on all of the veggies(she helped plant everything so she has a vital interest too ). I take pics, like I'm taking pics of my kids, and send them to my husband at work via text if something new has changed since the day before. Aren't we all funny creatures....

For the most part my two sons are not fond of the vegetables we planted this year. However, both assisted in planting and can't wait to enjoy the bounty. It's funny how having a vested interest can help shape decisions.

I go out every single day and just stare at my little seedlings. I pretend I'm actually doing something useful like pulling weeds or feeding them so the neighbors don't think I'm nuts, but no, I'm just looking at my little babies.
LOL. I think we've got it bad. Myself included.

I notice that the bed is 5 square x 6 squares. How will you cope with seeing to the three inside squares. Being a smallish person myself, I find that three squares wide makes for comfortable weeding as I do not have to reach more than 1 1/3 squares.
Thanks for the compliment Kelejan. With respect to the 5X6 squares we jumped the gun on that one. I figured that it wouldn't be that difficult to work the middle plants, I now know I was wrong. While it's possible to work the plants I find myself having to place a knee on the landscaping block and lean inward. I should have stuck with my original plan of 4X6 but I decided to get a little greedy.
What about sacrificing a couple of squares by putting a 11'x 11" pacing slab in them?

I love this idea, and may sacrifice a few squares in each of my 4x6 beds. I am vertically challenged and even the 4' wide beds are a bit much for me, especially the one that has trellises on one end and down one side. Being less than 5' tall makes a 4' reach a bit tricky!

Re: My First Attempt at SFG
Over the weekend we received much needed rain. Today was the first day I could bring out the camera. Below are a few more photos of the progress. I'm starting to think that the limited sunlight is resulting in slower growth. I'm going to be patient but I'm ready to see some significant growth .

Re: My First Attempt at SFG
I found that plants take a growth spurt after a rain even if they have been kept watered. Especially if there has been a dry spell.
Hang in there. I see blossoms and tomatos so things are doing ok.

Thanks Kay. For the most part everything looks ok. I just figured that the cilantro, basil, cucumbers and watermelon would be further along. Thanks again.
Re: My First Attempt at SFG
You mentioned limited sunlight. How much sun does your garden get.
btw I love the landscape brick beds.

Thanks Kay.
The garden gets approximately 5 hours of direct sunlight. Approximately 3 morning hours are lost due to tree canopies and 4 evening hours are lost due to the fence. I've definitely learned that I'll need to rearrange a few things next time.
Re: My First Attempt at SFG
Lack of sun may definately be contributing to the slow growth. I hope you can correct some of sunshine issues.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to resolve the problem without moving the bed. I think I'll add another bed at some point to an area that gets full sunlight. Since this was my first attempt I decided to push the garden towards the back of the property. During the planning and construction phases I thought there would be sufficient sunlight since there was no canopy on the trees. However, once the canopies developed I quickly realized that adequate sunlight may be an issue.
Nevertheless the plants seem to be doing ok. It just may take a little longer for some of them to develop.

I will say that the shade may keep your plants going during the really hot days of July and August. My son moved all his potted peppers into a dappled shade area last year and they grew great. The tomatos that stayed in full, all day sun didn't make it, but some in pots that he moved to some shade lasted much longer.

Kay, that's good to know. I didn't think about the shade assisting the plants during the dog days of summer here in the south.

Just a Few More Pictures
Bell peppers have finally transitioned from a yellowish tint to the expected green color. Everything else seems to be coming along.
