rain barrels through municipality
You all should check around and see if your municipality offers a program to provide discounted (or maybe free!?) rain barrels. I just found out ours did, and since I'm not in the mood to construct another blessed thing for a long time (boxes and MM wore me out!) I thought this would be good. I had to take an online class and a quiz, and then I was able to get a 45 gallon rain barrel for $50. Not super cheap, but a discount (looks like it would have been $80 at HD).
I'm in Franklin County (Cbus). Here's that link if anybody needs it: http://stormwater.franklinswcd.org/

The Fairfield Soil and Water Conservation District will be offering EarthMinded Rainstation 45 gallon Rain Barrels (regular $119) for only $63 on May 19 at the Violet Township Service Center 490 N Center Street in Pickerington.

You must register by the 11th to get that deal though.
Anyone intrested in purchasing a rain barrel or composter should check your with your local Soil and Water Conservation District or Waste Management agency to see if you can find great deals on them. They often offer them at extreme discounts.
For example in my local county here in Oregon (Marion) I can get an Earth Machine Composter for only $29 and a 55 gallon rain barrel for $53
http://www.co.marion.or.us/PW/ES/wastereduction/compost/truckload.htm
Other counties across the country offer similar deals.

Brilliant suggestion! I just looked on my city hall website and they have two programs going right now - one is an offer to purchase 30 gallon rain barrels for $35 and the other (two different departments working together) is offering a 50% rebate on rain barrels purchased this year (up to $30 total). So I can get 2 rain barrels (60 gallons total) for $40, and I can pick them up four blocks from home!
THANKS for the idea!!

Our local Watershed , Clinton River Watershed, sells the rain barrels with spigot, overflow, mesh and the gutter couplings for 75 dollars.

this website also has free instructions for building your own rain barrel if you prefer.

That's sad! My brother is in AZ and it is ILLEGAL to collect rain water. I understand their point, and I know it's a valuable resource, but that just doesn't seem right to me.

People may want to also check local nature centers and botanical gardens. Our county sells discounted rain barrels and composters, but one of our county parks sells different ones.
