Blooms not Bulbs? Empty Blooms not Bulbs?

Post  WolfHeart 4/29/2012, 3:20 pm

The other day i asked a question about my onions and found out that they were trying to set seeds Shocked I didn't have this problem last year but This year with the correctly formulated MM my onions have gone crazy Very Happy but not that they are 'bolting' (?) I am wondering why? I have searched around on the internet and have not found any information as to why it would occur early. to top it all off they didn't even bulb Sad I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them in their experience.

some information, they are red onions I planted them in early March, they have been in the ground for 45 days.

should I expect the same thing to happen to the rest of my onions (red and yellow)? or is there something i can do to stop this from happening? thanks for any info.

My elephant garlic is doing the same thing. Nice and green, flower bit tops and no bulb.

Put up a picture please,

My onions sets and garlic cloves have been both over wintered and some sets were planted in Feb and early March. The tops of the over wintered stuff are nearly 18 inches long.

The later stuff is about a foot long but as yet none will start to show bulb swelling for about another five weeks , when things will really start to take off giving me big bulbs mid to late June and a bit later for the younger ones.

one thing that comes to mind is that the sets were not stored well before you got them and they had already started growing internally even if they were heat treated stock , instead of being deep in the dormant state when planted out.

What sort of size were the sets and were they rock solid or a bit rubbery ?

The original bulbs/ cloves have all but been consumed by the plants as they put down their roots and produce the stems & leaves .

It may help if your remember that onions originated from the hot areas of Spain etc so untill you get those hotter dryer temps nothing much will happen other than lush green foilages and root production.

One of my books indicates that sown late in March you should expect a crop late August , Mels book indicates an average for the USA of 14 weeks from sow to harvest if sown in the same year which is a bit shorter than my 18 to 20 weeks given in my books and incidently this 18 - 20 week period is what my own Japanese red and yellow onions are reckoned to take if planted in February .

I just cut the flower buds out this afternoon, hoping to divert the growth away from the stalk and force the bulbs to enlarge. This garlic was planted first week of Nov. but with the mild winter we had, started growing right away. I had beautiful stalks in Dec. I'm thinking the growth started too soon. The rest of the garlic and the shallots are growing fine, no seed bud showing. I sprinkled a few handfuls of bone meal on them about 10 days ago. Anyway, I'm just leaving them in the beds until the green stalks die down and hoping.

I have heard and it seems true to me, when picking onion sets, choose the smallest ones you can get. The grain store here sells the onion sets in bulk by weight and I tend to be picky when selecting my sets. If you can find a store that sells this way you can pick through and choose the ones you want. Very Happy

Thanks Camprn, I would have thought it the other way around, very counter intuitive. I just happen to have a place very close by that sells onion sets and potato seeds loose. didn't find them until I had already planted for the year though Rolling Eyes but there is always next year Very Happy
