Welcome to the forum Pepper. I am a Georgia newbie too, just the far NW corner of the state. I have learned so much here already and look forward to following your progress!

I don't know how similar your weather is to Columbia, SC; but my broccoli has no issues with frost. I convert all my beds over to garlic, onion, shallots, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, and collards around September. I let all of the above grow through the winter, and I pull up the majority of it for my spring garden (which I start around March 1st).

This year I also tried Beets, Radish, European Mesclun Mix, Siamese Dragon Stirfry Mix (asian greens), Swiss Chard, Spinach, Arugala, Peas, Lettuce, and Carrots. The Arugula, Peas, Radish, European Mesclun Mix, and some Red Mustard were the successes. The rest did not do so well [possibly from neglect].

Pepper, do you still have that fennel around? If you aren't in love with it, I'd think about yanking it out.

How did the extra pepper plants fare last year, being planted with fennel?

The reason I ask is because fennel is known to be allelopathic to almost EVERYTHING, except dill. For some reason, fennel and dill like each other, but fennel is known to inhibit growth, cause other plants to bolt, or just straight out kill other garden plants.

It's a mean sucker, and I would be very careful with having it around.

brainchasm the fennel is all harvested and eaten, made a fennel and apple salad yummmmmmmmmm. I never planted the extra peppers with the fennel they were put in along a fence with my neighbor. Being in more shade they did not do so well, I am still learning what to put where.

I heard about that property of fennel, this was my first experience with it. I really did not think it would grow as late in the year as we planted it. It over wintered nicely, but we never really had a 'winter'. Because of what I have heard about it it will have it's own seperate place.

OPPS; brainchasm I went back to last years thread, the fennel WAS beside where my "extra" peppers were. These fennel did not do well at all, but neither did the peppers. Much later in the year Oct 14; I think; we planted a bunch of fennel seed where I had my sweet potatoes. These were the ones that did shine. Those by the peppers were transplants.
