WOO HOO!
Can't believe I'm celebrating fungus but I'm in the process of growing button mushrooms!

Re: What I found in my strawberry patch
3 years ago when I thought I was going to die from cancer, I made a bucket list and finding a morel mushroom was on it.
I cannot believe I found one on my own property.
So now I am going through every possible source.
The dirt that I had delivered last year, the new strawberries, the dog walking through the patch, bird poop.....

KIM
did you buy a kit to grow button mushies, I know they had them at territorial seeds, but I have not found a site in Canada that sells mushroom kits
I tried years ago to grow shitakes by buying a log.... afterwards I was thinking what a great scam....
Just buy this log for 20 bucks and soak it in water for one day............. OH and there are no guarantees...

Yeh, I bought a kit from Gurneys (I had a 50% off coupon).
MUSHROOM KIT
I'm on the second phase (there are yucky looking gray "threads" on the top. This is supposed to be a good thing.

It is one of the hardest parts of leaving Oregon, was leaving all the mushrooms.

O MY!
We tried the oyster mushroom kit this winter with no luck so far. Lots of fungal growth but no fruiting bodies. So I am going to plant it in the garden and hope for something to happen.

GWN, one word.... Jealous.
We found a few in our yard about 8 years ago but other than that we have to make a trip to MO, to go hunt them.

Here they grow in cotton wood trees. But what would the ones in the kit want? That is a bit of a mystery. But it does say something about hard wood logs, spent coffe grounds and straw. So I will use some straw and plant them and hope for the best.
At this point anything to get it out of the kitchen!

In my area they are truly a delicacy and many people hunt for them. They sell for $20-$40 a pound!

Re: What I found in my strawberry patch
.I'm jealous too, it's been years since I've had a morel mushroom. In our local paper a couple weeks back there was an ad for a growing kit for them for I think 39.95. I was tempted to order one, but I haven't yet.Morel mushroom habait site
The Chew had a segment on a company in california that you can buy mushroom growing kits, and they use recycled coffee grounds. The kit looks like a milk carton, and grow oyster mushrooms though.Back to the Roots mushrrom kits

Wow! I thought the guy here selling them for $15/lb was crazy cakes. We have our "patch" out behind DH's uncle's house that *knock wood* has never failed us.
GWN, add me to the list of jealous folks. It would be nice not to have to load up on the quad, wear mud boots and fall down muddy hills in search of them LOL!

We have spent several years searching several times a week for chantarelles, pine mushrooms, hedgehogs, oysters, and catathalasmaWN, add me to the list of jealous folks. It would be nice not to have to load up on the quad, wear mud boots and fall down muddy hills in search of them LOL!
However that was down in Oregon and we spent much of the fall down there searching for mushrooms.
I really miss that, but so far have found a lobster mushroom just out in our back yard, AND now a morel.
I LOVE hunting for mushrooms, even some of them I don't like, it is just the hunt that is fun.
Like a treasure hunt
