Looking for Zone 6A gardeners
I'm hoping to begin gardening in a community garden plot by the end of May, and would like to be in touch with others either in my area(Boston) or at least Zone 6A.
Are you in this zone? Where?

Have you been gardening long? I assume you use SFG, how is it going?

Re: Looking for Zone 6A gardeners
Glad you asked, I have been very happy with the results!
I started Autumn 2010 with one 4 by 8 box. Then expanded with two 4 by 4 boxes, and a few weeks ago added a tabletop of 4 by 4 filled with strawberries. It is addicting.... Just bought 3 blueberry bushes and contemplating if I will put them in boxes of their own for their acidity requirements or put them in the ground and amend like crazy. I believe sf gardening allows you to be successful without a B.S. degree and PhD in agronomy and soil science. I have followed the directions in the book for a solid and happy experience. Then I came across this forum which is fantastic for answering anything, and I mean anything else regarding sfg. I want to take the certification course and show others how wonderful this system is.

Wow, Phil, you are one ambitious gardener for a first-timer! What did you use for the wood for your beds? Also, what are you planting in your 4x8 bed?
Have you planted the strawberries yet? How many plants do you think the pyramid will hold? I think I may try one myself.
Llama momma - it seems most everyone I have come in contact with here and elsewhere, concerning SFG, has become addicted! Do they have an SFG-anonymous to help those addicted?

I haven't heard of an Official SFG Anonymous yet, but I think it would have a very large membership!

Re: Looking for Zone 6A gardeners
I'm in 6A (south of Boston). I currently have 5-- 4x4 beds, 1-- 3x3's & 2-- 4x 8's. So far I have carrots, kale, chard, mizuna, lettuce, peas, spinach, broccoli & radishes planted. Many tomato plants are safe under my lights & I was able to get more sowed today. Thank goodness for SFG, because I failed botany many years ago.

Re: Looking for Zone 6A gardeners
I am in 6A south of Boston close to RI border. This is my first year with SFG. I have one bed 4x4 ready for planting and a second one 4x4 in process. I have my seedlings on my deck in a greenhouse. I start them in my basement in Feb. I mostly have tomatoes which I end up giving away to people(I like growing from seed but I don't need all the tomato plants). I have to finish the 2nd bed this weekend but I need more compost.

My 4x8 bed is made out of cedar plants I bought at a local wood yard. They are knotty and therefore cost me 9 dollars per 16 feet compared to 50 dollars for non-knotty ones!!! I planted way too early this year, out of 36 peas, 3 came up, out of 64 carrots 4, and not a single onion set has popped yet... However, my letttuce, mesculin, romaine, and buttercrunch has grown like mad, and we're having a salad every day from it... I'm sure they all froze to death in March... I will be mass planting likely this weekend for my onions and maybe carrots, then in mid may it'll be tomatos, peppers, beans, eggplant, and likely more lettuce...
I planted dormant strawberries two weeks ago and to date none have livened up. I may go buy live plants this weekend and dig up the dead roots.

Sorry for the mix-up. Having 2 of you with such similar name is going to be fun!
However, here is what was meant for you.

Okay - now where about south of Boston do you live? I'm originally from New Bedford.
How lucky to have a garden to grow kale as here in Boston they havenever heard of flat-leaf kale. And I hate curly kale.

Why not do some canning? Canned tomatoes are easy and they are fabulous comes winter. I'm like you, I don't need all I will get but I will can mine for winter use.
I am originally from New Bedford. How far are you from there. That is certainly close to the RI border. There is great growing down in that area. Gardens are all over the place. Especially in Dartmouth and Westport.

Re: Looking for Zone 6A gardeners
Philct - I found some 1x8x8 at Lowe's for $8.92, so a bed would be $18.30. Not bad at all.
Home Depot has a kit of 1x12x4 boards with corners. The boards look great and it's only $34.97. Just assemble.
Did you line your the ground under your beds? With what?

I am in 6A as well. Live in western Pa. I built my boxes last summer and got part of a season so hopefully this year will be good.
This is my first year doing many things and most everyone is EXTREMELY helpfull. But this year I started seeds indoors, planting early crops, and composting all for the first time. It is a lot of fun and rewarding.
What are you working on or have trouble with?

I haven't been able to start anything because I've been waiting 2 yrs for a community garden plot. I think I may have one by the end of May. Since I couldn't be sure I will have to wait until I know and couldn't start any seedlings. I'll buy tomato plants and a few other things but will most ly plant seeds for summer plants. Beans, peas, kale, cucumbers, melons, and even will try some lettuces. I bought a box of wildflower mix, and a kids project gardening kit of a giant watermelon. The watermelon I'd like to plant in a hill all its own and see what happens!

I had simialr problem last year I did not start anyting from seeds and I purchased everything from nurseries. It saves a lot of money when you start plants from seeds so perhaps next year you get yourself set up for next year or start them later this summer for a fall criop.

Hey SwampCat,
I'm in Duxbury right along the water.
I started seeds indoors this year & I'm oh so happy that I did. I currently have 42 tomato plants that are doing incredible (I didn't think they would all take). I also started broccoli, rosemary, thyme, basil, marigolds, & kale from seed & so far so good. It's exciting to see how far things are coming along. Now if we could just have a bit of rain every 4th night I'd be in 7th heaven.
Will start cucumbers, watermelon & green beans indoors this weekend.

WOW 42 tomato plants!! That is quite an achievement so I must believe you have quite the garden space.
I only have 2 SFGs but am enjoying growing seeds inside. Think how much money you save instead of purchasing all those tomato plants..
