Asparagus Spacing

Asparagus Spacing
I am confused on the spacing for asparagus. Mel says either one or four per square, but the package says space 12 inches apart. How do I plant four per square? Please help.

Re: Asparagus Spacing
most instructions are based on row style gardening
Square foot gardening is based on raised bed improved soil gardening
Mel has been doing SFG for a long time and wrote his first book about it in 1981, 31 years of experience after knowing enough to write his first book should tell us if 4 per square works, do it.
draw a cross in the box and that is your spacing. After that follow his instructions on lanting asparagus and have patience, you have to let an asparagus bed develop for a few years, but they are well worth it.
I love to bring a bucket of cold water out and the first 6 or 7 sprouts get washed and popped in the mouth. nothing is as good as fresh raw asparagus while working in the garden

Re: Asparagus Spacing
Love asparagus and always blamed myself for not planting it "last year." Well, this year I put in 9 plants in the middle 4 squares of a 4x4 SFG with the idea that eventually these plants will eventually expand to fill the entire area. BTW, purchased them at Lowes for $3.98 per three pack. Have fun

Re: Asparagus Spacing
Funny thing, I passed some 2 foot high asparagus plants yesterday on my way to the store. I think someone forgot they were there. I wish I had had my camera handy.
