Coca Cola Cooler Planter - What's your unusual planter?
I finally turned my coca cola cooler into a planter box for my jalapenos and habanero peppers. I am happy with the results.
Does anyone else have an unusual item they are using for a planter?

TFS I've been wanting to find unusual things to plant in, but haven't been able to get out and find anything. That's inspiring.

I was desparate early last year to plant something but had no beds and only wanted tabletops. My immediated solution was my chairtop beds. two old chairs, a plank, 2 6" deep resturant meat keepers, and an old metal footboard.
This was my first bed replanted this spring.

When an old washer/dryer set was replaced, Stan's Appliance (the installer of new set) was kind enough to remove the drums from both washer and dryer. They're metal and pierced all over with holes. One spent time in a hole in the ground planted with tulip bulbs, but it is now above ground and grew a beautiful bunch of carrots last year. The lilies planted in the second drum are being evicted, so I can plant more carrots and the moles/voles will be unable to get at them. Also, PapaVino planted his ancient one-handled wheelbarrow with petunias, etc. a couple of years ago. It'll be planted again this year with something deer-resistent.

When we took out Dad's old cast iron natural gas grill (from the late 70s-early 80s) - it was the type that was a cast iron hinged "box" sitting on a post, mom had us sink it in concrete in the back of the yard and she plants petunias spilling out of it with the lid open... I'll try to get a pic next time I'm over there....
PS - we talked her out of planting in the toilet...

My mom always plants flowers in this old parrot cage. The little wrens make a nest in the birdhouse inside.

ME! I used to have one. I would have one to plant now except I was not home when my husband & son removed the old one & tossed it in the dumpster, breaking it.
My current unique planter is an old wheelbarrow/cart with potatoes planted in it.

I don’t have a pic, you will just have to in vision this funny story:
I work for a public utility, a citizen had ask to purchase an old fire hydrant and we sold him one minus all the inter workings (Just the hull) he planted this old plug (after he had painted it to look good as new) and made a petunia bed all around this plug, even planted them in the outlets of the fire hydrant. Well twice a year all the fire hydrants get flushed. This serves several purposes, it makes sure the fire hydrant is operational in case of a fire; it keeps the water lines clean of build up, and provides a maintenance list of several things that may need to be done to the hydrants. So on one of these regular flushing an employee drove up to the hydrant trampled this guys petunias and even started pulling out the dirt and petunias out of the fire hydrant preceded to turn on the hydrant before he found out this was just a dummy fire hydrant and he was at the wrong place, the real hydrant was across the road. Needless to say the customer wasn’t happy about his petunia bed.

That would be cool, it would be easy to add compost.

These are some great ideas! That tire one... Wow! And Josh, love the birdcage too! As for the milk jug, we'll be recycling ours from now on to put the running water from the bath in as we have to wait so long to get hot water to the back of the house.

Re: Coca Cola Cooler Planter - What's your unusual planter?
Strictly functional...
You know those half whiskey/wine barrels used for planters? They don't last forever; eventually the staves rot and the hoops end up on the ground. I used to fill the hoops with decorative concrete to make stepping stones, but the darn things have gotten really heavy in the last ten years! A few neighbors think they lost their garbage can lids in the last windstorm. Add a few metal scraps and voila... 2½ square feet of SFG.
One of them is planted with 4 types of lettuce that should be about 4 inches tall when I'll give it to a friend as a house warming present.
