Just when things were looking good for a successful gardening season, I had to have surgery on my foot. This all relates to an injury I sustained helping my wife's grandmother clean out her garage last November. Well, 5 months later, the foot got really sore and after a few tests, they determined my foot developed a cyst in the wrong place - right beside the old puncture wound.

So now I am laid up two weeks because the cyst was much bigger than anticipated. 7 stitches and lots of rest. Just at the time when you begin putting plants in. Good grief! I am determined this won't ruin my garden plans. Going to have to get creative for sure.

Won't the wife help get the plants started in the ground? Even if she isn't the gardener of the family I'm sure you could explain and show things to her. Do you already have beds ready?

Oh!! That really stinks, to put it mildly!! You must be so frustrated and disappointed. I really hope everything turns out well for your foot. Good luck on your healing and I hope it goes quickly and smoothly!! Smile

And that you can get back to the garden SOONER than you imagined!!

AW MAN! SQFTBIX, onward, on hands and knees if necessary! Stay off the foot, when they say OK, warm soaks will help! Convalescence is your friend! Hang in there Brother!!

My Father in Law offered to help with my garden but he has major health issues of his own. My wife would help but she has enough on her hands with me being laid up. Now that I have had a little time to think things through, I believe I can still get the plants in the ground. Granted, it may take a whole day instead of an hour or two, but I can do it in small doses. Thank God I have the plots ready to go.

I can have my F-I-L help me by going with me to pick them out and hand me them to put in the ground. I will overcome as there is nothing better than picking your own veggies from your backyard. And, in the final analysis, I am really hoping the foot issues are over with at this point. Laughing

Added bonus, FIL can be active in the garden and feel useful in spite of his health problems. A win-win.

Here is my thoughts...since your just planting you could get your self situated where you are sitting by the gardens on the grounds but where you can still reach into the boxes. Your FIL can hand you the plant that you want to put in the squares. Starting the fartherest you can reach from you sitting point. Then moving closer. Goodluck to you and I hope that your foot gets better soon.

I have to sit and work on my garden too...as long as you keep your dominant arm toward the boxes and the injured foot stretched out to maximize blood flow to it, this'll work out. Just be careful of straining your back by twisting too much. Take lots of rest breaks!

Some days I have to resort to using one of the long handled pickers to do things . Not just picking things off the floor but putting plants in ,as well as using a trowel on a 60 inch long handle

Dig the hole with the long handled trowel slight bigger than normal . Loosen the plant in the plant pot or take it to the hole in a small plant pot , use the long handle picker to put it close to the hole , tip it gently till the plant slips out , move it gently into the hole , then back fill with the long handle trowel and water it in with a tin can of water and the long handle picker .

Like you say you'll do it but it is a wee bit slower.

Good luck and get in those plants. Even if it takes you all day, at least they'll be done. I, too, need rest breaks during my garden efforts. It just takes longer, that's all.

Bet you wish you had them now. You could do it an awful lot easier. Ah well. Sorry we can't all come over one day and pitch in.

Thanks to all for the support and advice. I'll get it done if the weather holds. Foot is beginning to feel a little better so maybe by Saturday, it will be good enough to use on a limited basis. This weekends weather is suppose to be mainly showers on Sat and rain on Sunday through Monday AM. We shall see!
