Garden plan 2012 - GivvMi

I never posted my plan...I have two holes in one box that I haven't decided what I want to put in. Not sure if I should put 4 mini marigolds in one square...never did figure out where to put those. Maybe I should plant more of something else? Peppers are not an option; I don't have seeds for those.


A few items in haven't actually been planted yet...sunflowers are waiting for the box to be built & filled. I still need to find & purchase heirloom okra and thyme seeds. The bunching onion square is only half planted; I will add more soon.

Peppers like to be a little smothered so you could move your basil into your open squares or put in a geranium and some marigolds would look nice too!

I keep doing a search for companion/enemy plantings, and everything I'd like to put there is an enemy to something else I have next to one of the sqares. Haven't found geraniums on any lists, so will look that up since they get taller than onions, just to see how they'd do surrounded by onions, beans and peppers. I'd love some scented geraniums, like apple or something.

I love geraniums too. Especially as they thrive on the worst neglect (my specialty) I am not sure they would be your best bet b/c they are perennials. However, no reason you could not treat them as an annual.

And FWIW I pay absolutely no attention to companion planting and have never had a problem even when I realize after the fact I have broken a rule.

My generic answer for today is... Plant Shallots!

And my geraniums never come back, maybe it's the long winters .

@ Chopper: It seems the companion/enemy thing is just a guide, so maybe in our gardens the soil is renewed often enough it doesn't matter.

@ camprn: With me being the only person who eats many onions and shallots, and with all the onions that are coming up successfully, I might end up wasting shallots at this point. My bunching onions are supposed to taste similar. I may have a 3rd square that is unsuccessful, the Walla Walla onions...planted at the wrong season!

@ cheyannarach: Thanks for the links. I think geraniums are a tender perennial, so your harsh winters would probably kill them off. If you had a spot indoors to bring them inside, they might make it.

I'll figure something out...eventually.

The garden looks great! Mmmmm.... roma tomatoes. I'll have to put that on my list for next year!

Try Baker Creek for the heirloom seeds if you can't find them locally. All of the ones I ordered arrived about 2 days after I placed the order - I was so pleasantly surprised and I did not pay for expedited shipping. I ordered some flower seeds from another company the same time and those arrived over a week later.

Dill is supposed to do well with the cukes, but it says not with carrots, so that might be a wash.

Oh my gosh, you're going to get me into trouble with my husband Keely! I went to that site, and of course I couldn't just look at okra and thyme...I had to check out peppers and tomatoes (for next year, of course) and cumin and... and... !!! I want one of everything that is heat/drought tolerant or resistant!!!!! They have a much larger variety of seeds than I had to choose from last year. How does one ever keep from choosing more than will fit in one's garden?!?! :drunken:

Rosemary is good near carrots and beans, and has no bad companions; you would need to buy a transplant though; the seeds take a looooong time!

LOL! Well, now I guess I'll have company in my seed obsession! Last year I bought all my seeds - about $100 worth - from there and everything was delicious and had great germination rates! THANKFULLY, I had left over seeds from everything I ordered so this year I was set. I only ordered Onion seeds (Red of Florence & Yellow of Parma), Lemon Balm, Marjoram, Calendula (Ball's Improved Orange), and Summer Savory from them this year so far. I'm going to order some rutabega seeds before too long for winter and I'm sure some others. Ever order, they also include a packet of seeds as a thank you - Red Romaine. The only thing I wanted to order that they did not have was something I read about in companion planting guide - poached egg flower/plant. I ordered those from another company.

Do you like hot peppers? The cayene and tobasco peppers grew like crazy and the bugs didn't touch them! I have a whole bag full of dried peppers that is great to add to chili and salsas and more. I am also growing datil peppers again this year, I want to try making my own datil pepper jelly and minorcan seasoning!

I think we both posted the list of the heirlooms we have on a thread. If I have anything you'd like to try, maybe we can do a seed exchange if your wish list is too long for hubby's taste!

Oh, and did you see their online catalog?

I wish rosemary didn't disagree with my tummy so much. I enjoy the smell, but as soon as my tummy gets it, it wants to come back out.

Keely, I was TERRIFIED of what would happen if I actually downloaded the catalog... But now I'm doing it anyway. Hope it doesn't get me into too much trouble!
