Blueberry bushes in whiskey barrel Empty Blueberry bushes in whiskey barrel

Post  philct on 4/15/2012, 6:53 pm

So I decided to scrap the twigs I had planted and go with 2 year old bushes instead... I bought a Patriot and Reka bush and promptly planted them in 2 barrells near my SFG...

Anyone had luck with bushes in barrels?

Yours look great! I planted mine in 5 gallon buckets with drainage holes & MM last year and they grew very well. I fertilized them with azalea fertilizer in late winter and they have lots of new growth & bloomed fairly heavily. I bought 2 year plants last year from Simmons Plant Farm and they were extra large to start with.

We had temps down into the teens and I was a bit worried about the roots being above ground, but I didn't give them any extra care over the winter and they did just fine.

I have mine in 15 gallon pots and they do great
Out here I need to keep the soil in check to make sure it is acid enough, just our watering effects the ph. sometimes I think our water is liquid rock. So I keep soil sulfur around for my blueberries and azaleas

I am so jealous of your flowers!
My local garden centre had tables full of blueberry plants last year and I bought two. They told me there that the plants would only grow in a cool greenhouse here so that's where I put them and they both had masses and masses of flowers...BUT there were no insects to pllinate them and I could find no way of doing it by hand so all the flowers fell off. Mad Mad
I was so cross that I stuck the pots outside and ignored them all winter (temps down to 15°F). So now one is barely alive and the other is showing quite a few buds so it will be interesting to see if I get any flowers at all! If I do then they will be late in teh spring so perhaps some little insects will be around?

I was trying to figure out what size raised garden I need to put my blueberries. I know they need a different soil type than the rest of the garden friends. I like the idea of the barrels especially since we are still figuring out our new yard (just moved to MA from CT). The barrels will allow us to move them around. What did you use for soil?

This should work great. I am doing similar. I found that starting with the bigger BB plants works much better. My attempt with small plants failed. The new bigger ones are flourishing.

harvested my first crop of blueberries this morning
man are they good, sweet and big
had I known before how they would turn out growing in a container I would have done it years earlier
I suggest everyone try it out, these are great.
