Cages for gardens, tips and how well are they working? Empty Cages for gardens, tips and how well are they working?

Post  nansaidh 4/14/2012, 3:29 pm

Let me preface this post by saying I have 5 acres and for the past 20 years have NEVER been able to bring a garden to fruition because of birds, mice, chipmunks, voles, gophers, deer, hail in July, well.....you get the idea.

Now Im all fired up to build these cages over my garden so here are some of my questions:

How HIGH will the cages work at? Highest reccommended?

Trellises? I've seen using tulle, any other tips?

What about a 4x8 garden? Would it be easier to build just one cage, does it work well, removing it and putting it back on?

Does YOUR cage work? I need encouragement:) And yes, I will have hardware cloth UNDER the box!

So I need a "Stalag 13" garden but I am now hopeful, please let me know how YOUR cages have worked, thanks!

Can't help since I don't have a cage, but wanted to welcome you to the forum. I'm sure you'll get some answers soon.

When you refered to " cages " are you talking about theb large enough to stand up in fruit cages sized sort of thing

What sort of lay out and space will your ANSFG's be in / would it be cheaper quicker & more effective to make one large cage if 1/2 inch mesh galvanised chicken wire with sides , door and roof that has supports on the inside as well , make it in 1 inch galv steel water pipe that are set in concrete and it will last for years to contain several or all your beds .

Any bed that need a high level of insect protection could then just be covered in a flimsy fleece over a few bamboo canes .

If you were making one large mesh cage to go around several gardens, maybe you could use one of those frames that are usually used for boat/RV covers and use mesh instead of the tarp material that they use...
