Just wanted to say hello and I'm thrilled to find all of you! I've been doing square foot gardening for about 5 years now but still have a lot to learn. I started out with 3 squares and have grown from there.

New from Green Bay 396615 To your forum. I will start out by picking your brain a bit if I may. Now that you have several years experience with Square Foot Gardening...

1. Have you taught other people how to SFG or converted any died in the wool row gardeners?

2. Were there things that you did in your 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th year that you did differently than in previous years?

3. As you gained experience did you change what you planted and did you change the amount of what your planted?

4. Have you planted any exotic veggies or flowers that you would not have planted in a regular row garden?

5. What insect challenges have you had and how did you overcome them?

WOW what a way to start a simple Hello and Welcome post!

We have many brand new gardeners on the forum and I know that they will be able to learn from you and your experiences so please post often.

Again welcome to your forum and,

God Bless, Ward.

New from Green Bay Empty ?'s answered

Post  jsavolt 4/6/2010, 5:26 pm

I have advised others on how to start but my best advice is to buy Mel's book and do what he says! Every year I enjoy planning my squares and switching things up a bit. In my second year I built some trellis's out of electrical conduit (Mel's idea!) and love them. They are made from 6ft pipe and work great. Peas, tomatoes and cucumbers love them. I painted them bright green so they would look kind of funky. They could even be taller because my plants outgrow them! I've learned that it's best to grow most things up some kind of trellis.
Exotic veggies... purple carrots, lemon cucumber (it's round and yellow) and baby round zucchini are some favs. The cucumber and baby zucchini love the trellis. Regular zucchini gets out of control for me and I think this year it's not even getting one square. My favorite thing to grow is heirloom tomatoes. Any type, I'll try them all!

Insect challenges... Haven't really had any, guess i've been lucky there! My tomatoes last year did have a problem with brown leaves and spots and I never identified if that was an insect or soil problem.
