I'm so excited to find this forum. As a kid my Dad had the original square foot garden in the backyard and all the neighbors thought he was nuts until they saw how well it produced. As an adult my husband and I kicked around the country for a few years and finally settled in Roswell, GA to raise a family. I decided that a new square foot garden might be a bit educational for the kids growing up, after all, I hate the idea of my child thinking food only comes from the grocery store! I bought Mel's All New Square Foot Gardening and got to work! So far I have ambitious plans, but the beds are all in and even some of the plants and seeds and it's looking like I should at least manage to harvest some peas and potatoes at some point, so I'm happy.

So far I have two frustrations:

1- I decided to try seed starting and build a set up in the basement with some grow lights, but I think I should have started earlier, my tomatoes and peppers are still pretty small and I'm not sure that I'm going to bother planting them. I may just have to go to the store and buy the plants and next time start a little sooner. Of course, this is frustrating because I went through the trouble and expense of buying the lights and timer and setting them up, but I guess next year I might have more luck.

2- My neighbors cat. My neighbor has a cat that roams my property. I have very mixed feelings about it. I do like the fact that I think it kills the voles in my lawn and might keep away some critters, but on the flip side I've seen in lounging in the garden which I'm not a fan of. Not sure what to do about that!

Can't wait to read some other members posts and introductions!

Buy thee a few boxes of plastic forks... or one big box:

Looks odd, but will keep kitty out of your bed(s). I'm lucky and we've got a 6ft privacy fence, I've never seen any cats in our yard. Honestly I've never seen any animals IN my yard. I've seen some along the fence. This may be because they've learned my Pembroke Corgi goes nuts about them. LOVE when I spot one and then quietly point it out to her... and off she goes full speed barking lol.

Hi from another North Georgian!

I love the idea with the plastic forks! I was a little worried about our cat, since he lays on my daylilies often.

The one that worries me more is my male dog. With the height of the raised bed, I think he will still be peeing on my veggies!
He is blind, so a bit harder to stop. He walks til he finds something, and that is where he raises his leg.
Kind of funny when it is hubby though, honestly...
