Removable trellis posts? Empty Removable trellis posts?

Post  HereIGrowAgain 4/10/2012, 1:58 pm

My landlord is paranoid about anything that disturbs the thin layer of topsoil in my yard. I need to put up a trellis for tomatoes and cantaloupes in my garden box. He doesn't want me to put rebar or anything else that will remain in the ground permanently. Any suggestions?

rebar and/or steel t-posts can be removed when you move...just wiggle them out of hte ground...it may take a little work.

another option is to create a bracket attached directly to the raised box...i think mel's book illustrates this to a certain degree...pvc held to the side of the box using a half-curcular pipe fastener...not as strong as going into the ground, but may work.

Welcome! Smile

I've seen people attach trellis posts to the sides of their boxes using a bracket type of hardware that holds the post in place.

Another idea is shown in this thread which contains a pic of a cart Boffer built with parts screwed in that hold the hoop PVC...you could adapt that too...

I agree with landarch the rebar can easily be removed. I remove mine after I take out the tomato plants and start my fall garden. I grab the rebar with a pair of pliers and twist the rebar and this makes it much easier to pull out. If he is being that picky then he probably still won't let you put it in the ground. You could drill a hole into the top of the side of your box. Does that make any sense? If you used a 2x6 piece of lumber the 1.5 inch side is facing the sky. Drill a hole slightly bigger than the rebar and drop the rebar in. I might do that with mine just for a more sleek look to the trellis.
