I see Mel recommends 10f for a 3cuft pile. He doesn't mention how big the gaps/holes in the fence ought to be. I have a short section of hardware cloth and a roll of welded wire but the gaps are pretty large. Any tips?

The sides of ours are roughly 2x4" openings (sides to old dog ex pens) and we don't have any issue with stuff falling out. I've seen chicken wire used successfully, and don't see why rabbit wire wouldn't either. All will allow air in.

I used galvanized fabric for mine. They have it all the box stores in different lenghts. I used 4 foot mesh but you can use 3 foot and also 4U posts for the ends.

I'm not asking about how tall it should be, but wonder how large the holes in it can be before I don't have useful "walls".

as long as air can penetrate and the holes aren't so large that the compost falls out, I don't think it matters. I've seen them with rabbit wire, chicken wire, 2x4 wire and made from old pallets.

I never measured the opennings of the galvanized fabric but it is less than 1 square inch. Larger openning are fine to start with but after your pile breaks down it will become finer and tend to fall out of larger holes in mesh.

Did you check the galvanized fabric out? Do you have a Home Depot, Lowes, Tractors Supply, or and Agway nearby?

I suggest you check it out or go to the link in mentioned...these people have done this for years

I use the welded wire sheep fencing, the openings are 2"x4"and make a hoop as a storage unit for stuff that will eventually go into the active compost pile. The active pile I use pallets.

Thanks guys. This is the stuff I was needing to know.

What I have on hand (enough to use) has the 2x4 spacing mentioned above. Looks like I'll need to get something else for the pile. I'll look for some pallets. Thanks for your help.

I lined the inside of the wooden pallets with chicken wire. Didn't like the idea of the smaller stuff falling through the pallet openings.
