Free compost stuff

Since I retired, I'm always looking for free. I quickly found out that mixing the MM is not quite free. So I looked around and found a farmer who buys and sells cattle feed that he gets from a few area cotton gins. He puts the stuff in silage pits and after a while the pits have great compost. He also collects chicken manure and stores it on huge concrete slabs. Thankfully, he's a friend and said I could have all I wanted. My next trip was to our local golf course. They told me I could pick up as much grass clippings as I wanted from their greens, which are mowed two or three times each week. (Might be iffy there because the greens are sprayed with chemicals and I have to find out if the heat in a compost pit will render them inactive.) Then I found a number of people who told me I could have all the horse manure I needed that they have stacked up at their barns. Unfortunately, I can get all their cattle manure, too, but I have to go out in the pastures and pick up what I need. A little effort . . . but a money saver!

Wouldn't shock me if some of those farmer folks also had other animals on the property (rabbits, goats, etc.).

Yep, me too. Horse peole are happy for you to haul it away. It is work.. but so be it.
