Distance Between Pepper Varieties
How far apart do bell peppers have to be from hot peppers to prevent cross pollination? I never grew bell peppers and hot peppers in the same year but I've read that if they're too close, bell peppers might turn slightly spicy.....if that's even possible.

If you aren't harvesting the seeds, what is the concern? Why would the pepper flavor change?
Now if the seeds were a mix...then you might have a change in the fruit.
Therefore...how far can a pollinator fly?

If I am not mistaken, peppers are self pollinating. I have never heard of growing hot peppers near sweet peppers will alter the flavor of the other... have to look into that...
I know that my poblano fruit from the same plant have varying degrees of heat.

Re: Distance Between Pepper Varieties
My experience has been that peppers are NOT self pollinators. I had two beds rather close together last year and planted some very lovely LONG bell peppers...RED, that were my main plan
But also planted a package of coloured bell peppers, and would never do that again.
I had plants that were my lovely long bell pepper with a purple one amidst all the red ones
I guess the reason this was a problem is that the purple ones were awful and they ended up on almost ever pepper plant, at least one pepper was purple.

Peppers are self pollinating, but pollinators do help ensure set of more desirable fruit.

Planting hot peppers near sweet peppers will not make the currently growing sweet peppers hot.

I have a serrano pepper plant that I dug up from the garden last fall. It is the only pepper plant growing in the house; It is setting fruit .
Surprise
TTT If you want to save pure seed from your heirloom peppers, follow Quiltbea's guidelines for putting nets around the blooms. She has a thread or two about saving tomato seed and the exercise is the same for the peppers.

Re: Distance Between Pepper Varieties
I'm not really interested in saving pepper seeds for next year's crop. Maybe if I had the room to grow my own plants, I would do it.
I've read articles that say that peppers will cross pollinate, and a bell pepper could taste slightly spicy, etc and I've also read that article that camprn posted a link to. I would assume that an article from Texas A & M would be more reliable.
Hey camprn, thanks for posting that link. I know more now than I did 10 minutes ago.
