I took this picture yesterday and by the time I realized that the picture was this lousy, ............. well lets just say, I could not get another picture of them. are these maggots? Dsc_0132

I was taking all 3 of my compost piles from last year, to make them into one large one, after reading about the large pile compost. At the very bottom of one pile, right where there was some course sawdust I found this clump of........ What a Face THINGS.....
I know they are not baby worms....... do they have any value to my compost? OR are they going to eat my house? Smile

They look like pupa, of what I don't know. Were they wiggling or still? Keep turning the compost and they should die, especially if you get some hot temperatures.

It's hard to tell by the pic, but your compost looks really wet.

I've had those same things in my compost bin last year. They either matured and flew away or they just croaked. I just assumed that they were some sort of flying insect.

In my opinion moisture control in a tumbler is a bit tricky. I have more issues controlling the moisture and mixing in a tumbler. That's why I have gotten to where I prefer to compost on the ground. The ground to me just seems more consistent.

I was thinking of getting a tumbler but I've decided to downsize my compost pile into a more manageable 3x3x3 instead of the monstrosity I have.

This was one of my compost piles left out in the yard last summer, the whole thing just thawed out a few days ago, which is why it appears so wet. The stuff where I found these were thawed out....
Or at least the frozen stuff on top of them just thawed out.
I have decided to have 2 composts one large pile, and then my tumbler.

THanks
