Huge thunderstorm hit tonight. Tons of hail and months worth of rain in just a few hours. Garden had been producing tomatoes, squash, broccoli, peas, swiss chard...peppers had their first flowers Sad

You know how they say if you want it to rain, just water the garden? Well, I had just finished installing my drip irrigation system...

Seeing pictures and videos from around town this morning and I'm just thankful it wasn't worse at our house. My husband's car was out in the driveway and appears fine this morning. Lots of cars around town with windows completely smashed in. Ice piled up like you wouldn't believe...it covered a nearby parking lot with about 6 inches, higher in drift areas. We just don't get weather like that down here. It was 93 yesterday and supposed to be 92 today.

wow, it looks like your garden was very well established when this happened
You never know, few days of sun, might just perk up some of your crop.
WOW you certainly are WAY ahead of here.

TOO bad for your losses.....

Oh elliphant, I'm so sorry to hear this happened. I hope there's some good recovery in your garden. If they are strongly established, many of them will survive, I'm sure. Good luck.

Not much left in this bed. Some of what had been in it was broccoli, though, and that needed to come out anyway as we are firmly set in the low 90s now.

Wish I'd taken "before" pics, but here's after the storm Img_2415

The trellised cherry tomato plant on the left is just about 1/4th of what it had been, if that. It probably had at least 100 tomatoes on it when the storm hit (had picked about 2 dozen two days before). Pleasantly surprised at how well the 2 determinate plants in front came through and there's a pepper in between them that still looks good. Chard will come back...it's funny because I've been growing chard for a while now and mostly chopping it up tiny and freezing it ice cube shapes that I would add to sauces and such, but just last week I was brave and chopped it up and put it in my usual veggie saute and found that it was just fine! So now I really want it to hurry up and come back so that I can get those greens in my diet Laughing

I was surprised at how well this newest bed had come through until I looked at the fence behind the beds and saw how pocked it was by the others and not by this one. The difference is that this one is where the house blocked the ice. So these young pepper and tomato plants are mostly ok. I did lose one of the peppers since I took this pic on Saturday. But I also had beans, okra, and melons (which I had planted before the storm) come up since then.

I wish the peas still looked as good as they did in this picture right after cleaning up Saturday morning. Sad They took longer to show the beating they went through. New growth showing on the almost gone cucumber and tomato plants in the back...even 1 new tomato starting to grow! Beans have also come up in this bed since then.

Oh, my poor squash! I was needing to prune them as I was starting to see powdery mildew, but not that much! Epazote is battered, but strong, and oregano wasn't harmed in the least.

It's been pretty cool to see the new growth come from stems and vines that were pretty much denuded. I'll take pictures again next Saturday to show how much difference a week makes. After taking these pics I went to Home Depot and picked up some of their veggie plants which happened to be half off. Needed to fill those bare spots before the puppy got any ideas. April and May are usually my biggest harvest months, to give you some idea of where I am in terms of "seasons." (Our last frost date was early Feb...of 2011)

Its so nice your plants are making a recovery in many cases. Plants are very resilient and will make it thru if given a chance. Good luck.

I have a Mexican Cookbook that calls for epazote a lot and I have not been able to find any. Where did you get the seeds?

I actually bought it as a start at a local nursery.
