Fragrant plants and flowers - smell wells :)

Ok - not sure I'm going to undertake this project this year or wait until next, but I am that person with the sensitive nose who is really motivated by smell. I am that person who will feel better all day just from smelling lilacs or brushing by my basil or thyme. I even like that wonderful tangy smell that tomato plants give off. I am that person who grew up with my grandmother showing me to rub mint in my hands to make them smell good. However, I should add that I am also that person that thinks boxwoods smell like the neighborhood cats have been visiting them, but my family doesn't smell it (and they don't have cats)!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE fragrant flowers and herbs. Lilacs, mock orange, fragrant roses, basil, thyme, mint....you name it.

What kind of plants do you suggest with wonderful scents?

Lemon balm, lemon verbena (depending on your climate), lemon thyme, stargazer lilies (and a few others), mock orange shrubs, scented geraniums, some of the "fruity" mints or sages/salvia.


Do NOT get Rhododendron Occidental (deciduous)... smells like skunk, or some of the junipers (smell like cat pee)... also, some salvias grown for their flowers smell remarkably like that visiting cat was there.

I'm sure there are others, but those come to mind pretty quickly

I love scented plants too and I especially love Night Scented Stocks.. easy to grow annuals, hardy and the scent is wonderful, drifting in through the windows in the evening and night and when they get wet.....

Chocolate Mint, Spearmint, Apple Mint are my favorites.

All-time, hands-down favorite fragrant shrub is my Variagated Winter Daphne, in bloom right now and so fragrant you can smell it from several feet away. Everyone who comes to my door right now wants to know where the scent is coming from.

Also have a Clematis Armandii evergreen vining plant that smells wonderful. I have it trained over the little arbor I designed for over the side gate. Need to have another one much closer.

And of course, sweet Alyssum is always a lovely fragrant addition to annual flower baskets or borders.

@curio - LOL so you understand my desire to stay away from ammonia-smelling shrubs...

The herbs all sound terrific and I am definitely wanting to do some kind of herb SFG soon. The Evening Stocks intrigue me because my husband is a wildflower nut so I bet he would like growing those. I am a night owl (although I think Shannon1 has me beat) and I like the idea of having some evening blooming plants.

I so wish the Varigated Winter Daphne would grow in my zone (what a pretty shrub) but researching it, it sounds like it's only hardy through about zone 7. While it could be tried in a container, I am not sure I'm quite THAT green-thumbed yet (although you all and this method are definitely causing it to be much less brown).

Carolina Allspice looks like it has a "spot" in the MO botanical garden website and would grow in my zone - might have to run down there and check that out...
