If you let it trail over the edge you can get 2 in that space. You may have to trim some of the bigger leaves inside the box.

There is a new breed of zucchini I found that is said to be smaller, meant for containers or planting close together. Check these out http://www.reneesgarden.com/seeds/seeds-hm/vegR.htm#squ

I have had decent success with regular zucchini planting one per square. I put them to the north of the bed, let them hang over the edge on to the ground below, and keep them trimmed up. I wouldn't put them right next to each other though, maybe something else in between
