They say you never forget your first time...
I did it! Bought the book around Christmas, built my boxes and covers, foraged for five composts, traded for coarse vermiculite on the black market, suffered scorn from family and friends...Here's the result so far. (Sure hope this image posts)
My problem was unique...only a narrow area on the side of my yard suitable for a garden, so I build 2 2x6 boxes which I placed on the side of house facing south. May not look like much but, it's mine.
Here's the primise of good things to come...

That looks good Daryl ..
I bet by this time next year you will have gone native and made a two foot deep by one foot wide set of boxes to go at the wall edge and move the red boxes a foot forward.
The strawberries would /shoud do great in the back beds in such a set up where they can hang over rather than having to be mulched etc.

Fantastic looking pictures - and love the healthy looking strawberry plant! Just like you I won't forget the first time either - my first shipment of strawberry plants will arrive soon and going into my first tabletop. This stuff is so much fun.

Truly excellent first start
Thank you for sharing. Great boxes! Of course, this is only the beginning. Next comes a new house with a bigger yard, more boxes, etc.

Those looks great and the plants look so healthy. Neat critter cover there too. Good for you! Hey, 24 squares is nothing to scoff at (says the girl with 24 squares). Good for you for taking advantage of the space you have, and not just assuming you didn't have enough room for a garden. I'm on here searching the table top threads because I have room for a 2'x6' bed too and would really like 12 more squares. But I can't put them on the ground next to the foundation like you because there is a vent there I'd end up blocking. It's making me crazy!

I painted the insides with Polyurethan (I know...probably against the rules...I was feeling "mavricky."). The outside was leftover paint from this arbor I built last summer in the back yard....another fun project for not-very-handy guy. I lined the bottom with plastic garden mesh under landscape fabric. That has been a great way to provide some bottom support while also keeping weeds out. It was easy to attach with a staple gun. The wire covers are constructed with simple pressure treated 2x2's I had Lowes cut to length.

It is a pretty convenient size, but I could sure use about 12 more. When you start gettin into tomatoes and things that take two squares, they fill up in a hurry.

You must be in a warmer climate to have all that growing so well, it all looks great, or perhaps it is just the red paint
Looks like the friends and family scorn will all be for not...
They will be clamouring for your fresh strawberries..
Good on ya!

I do, indeed, call God's country of Mississippi home. I won't consider myself so fortunate in a few days when it's 97 at 8:00 pm from April to October. Like most of the country we had no winter. I did start early, but since my beds are sheltered by the side of the house I decided to risk it. My plan for frost was to cover my "critter cages" with plastic and I saw a neat trick on YouTube using exterior Christmas lights to keep the boxes warm on cold nights. Turned out not to be necessary because of the unusual wather pattern...which is NOT related to glabal warming, but is somehow Barack Obama's fault!
