At least it's not a cobra like my PI friends have to watch out for in their garden.

I was weeding my strawberries the other day when my hand grazed a little bull snake, only about a foot long but freaky none-the-less. I hate snakes.

We have a resident blacksnake in our garden. We rarely see him, but I know he's there and has been since we bought the place. He used to like climbing up into the bushes at the side of the house for a bit of a snooze, but my boys make so much noise playing outside that he must go into hiding at the first sound of the back door opening these days. We found his old skin recently:

snakes - Page 3 6951165906_3e736c1b68
It measured about four feet long. But for those of you freaking out about snakes, we like the blacksnakes because they like to eat smaller copperheads and other unpleasant things. With a lake just down the hill a ways, copperheads are a potential issue, but our blacksnake has been the only one we've seen in the yard so he must be doing his job. I'm just glad the alligators don't like to climb that hill; THOSE in my garden would freak me out!!! Shocked

I love snakes in my garden, especially since I have been assured that there are no poisonous snakes in the state east-river (I live in the FAR east corner of the state!). Having grown up in rattler country, non-poisonous is definitely a plus. Now, if only I could grow some of the little garter snakes into boa size to take care of the bunny issue in my yard.....

I actually like snakes too. I had pet king snakes and rescued a sick ball python once.

So my thoughts are, they are here on our earth for a purpose. They keep rodents down, etc. As long as it is not a rattler or copperhead, he is fine in my garden. We do have copperheads around our property, so we're careful to watch for those.

Acara......When I took a closer look I thought "is that a rattler?" because I knew they also had that triangular head and thought I could just make out the tip of a rattle on the end of its tail. Again, you can keep those babies away from the northeast, thank you very much.

QB, we have rattlesnakes here in the north east, but they are incredibly rare, due to loss of habitat and the fact they were hunted to near extinction. Timber rattlers are a protected species and if you see , or more likely hear one in your area, contact Fish and Game. They are monitoring the species. What a Face That is the only venomous snake in New England. Very Happy

@camprn......I never knew that. Now I'll have to take a closer look at any snake that passes my territory. I never worried before.
