Probably the only good thing about hearing aids, once I take those out, my world is quiet and no more buzzing bees

Ok those REALLY big spiders that build their webs twice the size of my deck railing - those kinda freak me out and have to get relocated far away from where I wish to sit! We don't have a lot of snakes here in the middle of town...just a garter once in a while. But I so LOL'ed about Shannon1 posting. She is my fellow night owl!

Re: snakes
Had one of those today up here in Orange Park! I'm not a big snake person, but I have to say this guy looks kind of cute in this photo He/she was about 18-24 inches long and about 3/4" - 1" in diameter. I did just read today that a female may give birth ovoviviparously to between a dozen to 40 babies from July through October. I think I'll just keep calling it a "he".

Snakes, ooohh how I hate them. I am going to have nightmares tonight.
KDeus - I used to live in Orange Park when it was a sleepy little town. One high school in the whole county. We had to drive to Green Cove Springs to practice basketball in their gym. Orange Park High did not even have a gym in those days.

GREAT photo! LOL he almost looks cute.
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: snakes
Okay, it took me years to get used to the idea of snakes being my friends, lol. Now I just benignly let our couple of big garter snakes do their thing. They love to sun on the carport and they must be used to us because they just look at us like: "Oh...it's you..."
What about copperheads though? They are poisonous, correct? They seem to be aggressive as well. My neighbor, who is an avid gardener had a momma copperhead chase her out into the street because she accidentally disturbed a nest of her young. Do they have benefit to gardens? If not, I am not sure I want them to be around. Maybe we'll just give each other a wide berth?

Re: snakes
It will take some time for me to get used to having this guy around. But now that I know he's harmless, I feel a little better. I just want to be knowledgable of who or what I'm sharing my yard with. Now if it were a copperhead, there would be no more copperhead in my yard. Can't take risks of the poisonous kind with my kids and dog.
Speaking of dogs, your avatar of your baby Bostons is sooo cute! My Boston, Roxy, is two. I remember when she was that small. what are their names?

Here's my garden buddy
My dog Maddy was barking her head off Friday, so I went out to investigate. She was looking down at this, right next to my 4x4 box:
I was quite freaked. Which is funny, because you can see how small this baby is next to the hose. After reading on the Maryland DNR website, it's a baby Eastern Ratsnake (not rattlesnake - that's what I thought it said at first!) As adults they're black, and we have them all over the place in our area of Annapolis. But the babies have this totally different coloring. He was curled up, quivering his tail, and making lunges with his head towards Maddy when she got too close. Poor dog didn't know what to think:
"Bark bark bark! Get away from mama's garden!"
Though snakes aren't my favorite critters, I didn't want to kill it. I was curious if they were beneficial to the garden? At any rate, hubby moved him to the woods behind our house.

Good Maddy! She sure is protecting you and the garden! And thank you for the nice comments about my little girls, Annabelle and Charlotte! That little rat snake is gorgeous, too.

I'm sure the ratsnake is beneficial. It'll surely swallow any voles that might be lurking and any field mice so let him enjoy your garden.

Re: snakes
they may look that way, but they are good predators in the garden. Wish I had me some snakes instead of chipmunks and squirrels.kimberlee wrote:Yeesh, those Florida snakes are MEAN looking!

Lol, me too, Camp. I actually have never seen any snakes in my yard, now that I think of it. But then, I am in the middle of the city. I do, however, have rabbits and deer
Re: snakes
When I lived 5 miles out of town (in Wisconsin), I used to have a lot of bull snakes in my yard (harmless but about 5' long and cranky looking). Now that I live in town, I don't have snake issues. I do not envy the people in Florida for the critters they have to put up with! Hats off to you!
Need more snakes!!
We've lived in MO and TX and Now reside in the NE.... Where are the snakes???
I wouldn't mind having some rat snakes, black snakes and the like. I need chipmunk control!! Where are the predators anyway?

@hruten......You'll probably get garter snakes and grass snakes. The garter snakes can grow quite large. I have a resident. He loves roaming near my compost pile and the piles of old fall leaves behind one of my compost barrels.

Snakes
I've seen snakes in my area of eastern Baltimore county this year too. Been here over 12 years and never saw one before. Not fun! More than anything else, they just startle me. I have been assured they are harmless but I'd prefer they leave just the same.
