I'm convinced that adding even small amounts of worm castings to "iffy" bags of compost will enrich them so veggies will grow better. And even if a member finds a good compost, it is not available in all areas. Case in point: the Black Kow Company make 3 very good composts, but they are not distributed all over and not all of the products are distributed to the same places.

The vermiculite database is great for locating vermiculite. Thanks to Wardnwake for maintaining it. But is it time for a compost database? A list of brand names could be put in the comments section. Just a thought.

My plants in the 4x6 box are soooo much greener this year since the red wigglers moved in I am amazed every day when I go out there.

Totally new to gardening from Delaware - Page 2 Empty From DE to MD

Post  asilcox 3/25/2012, 12:46 pm

I am in MD, near DE, and found my 5 types of compost at:

Southern States in Kingstown outside of Chestertown, MD (leaf mold and composted cow manure).

Ronnie's Garden Supply near Smyrna, DE (worm castings, kelp meal, and alfalfa meal - crazy expensive, but I wanted my 5 types!)

I also threw in a little composted chicken manure (a tiny bit) for fun.

I hope that this helps! I am a newbie, too - excited, but know very little! Shocked

If you're in New Castle County, don't forget mushroom soil as a compost. There's lots of that available. Also, check with U of D - they are an ag school and their research farm generated plenty of manure when I went there.

Oh, I wish I'd known about this before yesterday! I was in Dover Thursday to Saturday, and would definitely have stopped by Ronnie's if I'd known they had "odd" composts. For some reason, I can't find more than three types at the garden stores here.

Hey now.....you two gave me a brilliant idea.

My sister and brother-in-law are going to a race in Dover at the end of May and I'm dog-sitting for them(4 dogs and 1 cat) and as payment for my services, I could ask them to swing by Ronnie's and pick up some worm castings, kelp meal, etc as payment for my dog-sitting services. What a Face

I don't have the bag anymore, but I remember being a little shocked at how expensive it was - it was one bag with the alfalfa, kelp, and worm castings mixed together. It was not with the cow manure, it was closer to the plants.

Where in New Castle should I look for mushroom compost? I am willing to drive! :-)
