Hi folks
I've ordered red wigglers that should be here sometime mid-week. I've been setting up the container for them (18 gal rubbermaid tote with lid) and I am having the devil's own time finding enough newsprint without colored ink. Seriously, it seems that nearly every page has something that is colored somewhere on it.
Has anyone used the lightly colored newsprint (one or two colors with the black, and only in a few areas) successfully for the bedding? I'm nearly at my wit's end with this right about now... and I didn't have many wits to begin with.

Thanks.

I have read that colored regular newspaper is okay, it is the slick, colored print you want to avoid. For example: coupons, sales flyers, etc. Let me say though, I do not have any worms.

Good Luck!

First, check the newspapers' website and see if they use a soy based ink for all of their printing(including colors). Many newspapers have moved to soy ink, but for some reason it's difficult to find out. You may have to call them. I have also read that worms will take ANY paper, even glossy. Junk mail, magazines, they just don't care(and some places, including people who sell worms, advocate feeding that glossy junk mail to your worms).

The problem with a lot of this stuff(gardening in general) is the confusing information that is provided. Kind of like with pressure treated wood and even with vermiculite. It's old information taken as current information and passed along as misinformation. You really have to find out for yourself and on a case-by-case basis.

I'm knocking on wood while I write this, because I've had my worms less than a week. Anyway, I have newsprint in mine with colored pictures on it and so far, they seem very happy.

My 20 gal. worm bin is only 11 days old. I am using newspaper and some of it is colored. Remember you can use cardboard too. I mix both beddings together.

I use all newspaper, even colored. I don't include the slick paper(coupon pages) because I just don't know what is in it.

Hi curio,
Totes work just fine! I have a blue one.
Drill plenty of holes in the lid. PLUS, keep their bedding and chow on one end (raise this end of the tub an inch or two) and their liquid "tea" collecting at the lowest end.
Remove the lid and "mist" them daily. You may leave the lid off for some time every day or so.
Good Luck
