Just finished filling the garden and compost bin...
Hey all just finished mixing up MM, and laying out my little spot for my first try at SFG..

Now to figure out what I'll plant first..
I picked up a bunch of onion bulbs the other day so I'm guessing they'll be the first 'sacrifice', er guinea pig, er try at SFG'ing..
Wish me luck !!

You're so much further than I am. I was all set to order the hemlock boards next week but I ran into a bit of a snag in the layout of my boxes.
Looks great to see those boxes filled with MM

Quick question... How long should I wait for the soil to settle ?? Does it vary ??

You're welcome Tuxdad. I would guess settling will vary depending on how "chunky" the compost is. All I really know is that there is some settling involved. Hopefully someone else can provide a better answer.

Wow. That's quite a large SFG. How will you plant/harvest those middle squares?

The MM is only in a 2'x8' area.... The rest will probably be used for flowers or maybe some single planting to compare to...

That might look kind of cool with wildflowers growing in that box

I've never waited for settling when I started any of my boxes. I just added more dirt/compost/whatever at the end of the growing season to bring it up for the next year.
Good luck! It is an addictive hobby. I just bought what I needed to start another 4x8 bed.. the last one I can possibly fit in my yard.

Re: Just finished filling the garden and compost bin...
I've got one or two more areas I'd like to turn into SFG's if things go well with my first attempt.. One's about 8x12, but triangular, so I'd probably break it up into two spots, and the other is about 3x24.. That one would take a bit more work since there's a partially rotted stump...
We'll see how things go this year first...

You might also just want to sacrifice one square by putting down a stepping stone for better access to the other middle squares.

I like TN Gardner's idea of a few stepping stones behind the 2nd veggie row for easier access. Even with flowers, you will need to get in there to at least weed a bit or maybe add some mulch when it gets hot.

If you wet the beds well enough water this will " settle " them
( For water read dam good soaking till all the mix is wet ,not just the first top inch or so )
